Backlight (Dutch : Tegenlicht) is a documentary television program by Dutch public broadcasting organisation VPRO. [1] [2] The first episode of Backlight was broadcast on 8 September 2002. [3]

Contents

The program "aims to grasp the quintessence of prominent trends and developments" in the practice of critical journalism, and tries to improve understanding of the intricate inner workings of our modern society. [4]

The program won the Zilveren Nipkowschijf in 2005. [5] The episode "Lockerbie Revisited" won the Prix Europa in the category TV Current Affairs in 2009. [6] The episode "Money & Speed", made for iPad, won the Golden Eye at the Dutch Design Awards in 2011. [7] [8]

VPRO released four documentaries in 2009 and 2010 under a Creative Commons license using the content distribution feature of the Mininova BitTorrent tracker. [9] [10] [11]

Anouk Schemmekes, professionally known by the mononym Anouk, is a Dutch singer and songwriter. After her 1997 breakthrough rock single "Nobody's Wife", she had additional hit records in the Dutch and Belgian charts. Many of her albums topped the Dutch album charts, most of them going Platinum and several debuting in the number 1 position. The Stripschapprijs is a Dutch prize awarded to comic creators for their entire body of work. It is awarded annually by the Stripschap, the Dutch Society of comics fans, since 1974. The prize is non-pecuniary, but is considered the most important award for comics in the country.

Willem Theodoor "Wim T." Schippers is a Dutch artist, comedian, television director, and voice actor. The Gouden Ganzenveer is a Dutch cultural award initiated in 1955, given annually to a person or organization of great significance to the written and printed word. It was screened at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam on 4 April 2008 and broadcast by the Dutch documentary series Backlight on Nederland 2 on 7 April 2008. It was subsequently made available through American Public Television.

"Google: Behind the Screen" is a 51-minute episode of the documentary television series Backlight about Google. The episode was first broadcast on 7 May 2006 by VPRO on Nederland 3. It was directed by IJsbrand van Veelen, produced by Nicoline Tania, and edited by Doke Romeijn and Frank Wiering.

"Lockerbie Revisited" is a 52-minute episode of the Dutch VPRO documentary television series Backlight which was broadcast in the Netherlands on the eve of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi's second appeal against his conviction of multiple counts of murder for his connection to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 that started at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh on 28 April 2009. The film's director, Gideon Levy, narrates in Dutch and conducts interviews in English with retired FBI officer Richard Marquise, Detective Chief Superintendent Stuart Henderson of the Scottish police, ex-FBI laboratory official Thomas Thurman, UN Observer at the Lockerbie trial Hans Köchler, author and journalist Ian Ferguson, former CIA agent Robert Baer, ex-FBI laboratory scientist Fred Whitehurst and former Lord Advocate Lord Fraser of Carmyllie.

John Dennis Liu is a Chinese American film-maker and ecologist. He is also a researcher at several institutions. In January 2015, he was named Visiting Fellow at Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. John is also Ecosystem Ambassador for the Commonland Foundation based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Arjen Henrik Lubach is a Dutch comedian, author, music producer and television presenter. Between 2014 and 2021 he was the host of the weekly news satire television show Zondag met Lubach. Between February 2022 and October 2024, he hosted his next show, De Avondshow met Arjen Lubach. The day after the last episode, he announced that he, along with his whole team, will continue with a new show at RTL from spring 2025.

Zondag met Lubach was a Dutch weekly satirical television programme that aired between 2014 and 2021, presented by Arjen Lubach and broadcast on NPO 3. Each week Lubach talked for half an hour about the news of the past week through various fragments from the media infographics and investigative journalism. The show's main scriptwriters were Tex de Wit and Pieter Jouke. The program was recorded in the main auditorium of the Theater Bellevue in Amsterdam.

30 minuten was a 1995 Dutch satirical mockumentary TV series, written by Arjan Ederveen and directed by Pieter Kramer. Ederveen also starred in every episode. Two series of seven episodes were produced and broadcast by the Dutch TV station VPRO between 1995 and 1997.

Lucille Martine Werner is a Dutch television presenter and politician. She is best known for hosting close to 2,000 episodes of the word game show Lingo in the years 2005–14.

The Libris History Prize rewards history books originally written in Dutch, that appeal to a general audience. Originality, readability and historical soundness are the most important criteria. Established in 2007, it is awarded annually since 2009 by Libris, an association of independent Dutch booksellers, and amounts to €20,000 for the winner. All applications go through a selection process out of which a longlist of ten books are selected and announced. Subsequently, another selection round takes place which nominates a shortlist of the five best books. The author of each shortlisted book receives €1,500. Typically, the (independent) jury's selection is discussed and criticized in the Dutch press.

<i>Het Sinterklaasjournaal</i> Dutch childrens television program

Het Sinterklaasjournaal is a Dutch children's television series that has been broadcast every year since 2001 during the Sinterklaas period. The program is a fictional, children news program, in which the adventures of Sinterklaas and his Petes during their stay in the Netherlands are told. The program has been broadcast by the public broadcaster NTR on the children's channel NPO Zapp since 2010.
