The badminton women's singles tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place from 11 to 20 August at Riocentro - Pavilion 4. The seeding was decided on 21 July 2016. ^[1]

Spain's Carolina Marín defeated India's P. V. Sindhu in the final, 19–21, 21–12, 21–15, to win the gold medal in women's singles badminton at the 2016 Summer Olympics. ^[2] This was the first medal of any colour for Spain in Olympic badminton, the first and only gold medal for a female non-Asian player. ^[3] This was India's second consecutive medal in the event, after Saina Nehwal became the first Olympic badminton medalist from India in 2012. Nozomi Okuhara of Japan won the bronze medal after reigning gold medalist Li Xuerui from China was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury. ^[4] This marked the first time that China failed to make to the podium in Olympics badminton since 1996.
