Baki Jashari

Baki Jashari (born 1960 in Pristina) is a Kosovar composer, conductor, and music educator who directed the Kosovo Philharmonic from 2006 to 2024. [1] He studied composition at the Academy of Music at Ljubljana, graduating in 1984. He would later move back to Ljubljana, conducting the Academy's string orchestra from 1990 to 2000. He was also director of the Professional Choir of Radio Television of Pristina  [ sq ], from 1987 to 1990. [2]

Personal life

Jashari's wife, Elife Podvorica, and his daughter, Arta Jashari, [3] are both sopranos. Jashari is afflicted with diabetes and a heart ailment, and came with a bout of COVID-19 in 2020, but was nursed back to health by Arta. [4]

The newspaper initially published as a weekly magazine Koha, that ran from 1992 to 1994, becoming a leading weekly magazine in Kosovo. The initial team included new generation of opinion-makers such as Ylber Hysa, Baton Haxhiu, Dukagjin Gorani, Eqrem Basha, Shkelzen Maliqi, etc. The newspaper with the same name was published for the first time in 1997. Its current editor in chief is Agron Bajrami.

The Adem Jashari Olympic Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Mitrovica, Kosovo, which is used mostly for football matches and has been the home ground of the Kosovan football club KF Trepça since 1999. The stadium has a capacity of around 18,500 after renovation is completed. This stadium, built in 1938, was known as Trepça/Trepča Stadium until 1999. After the Kosovo War, the stadium was renamed in honour of Adem Jashari, one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

Kohavision is a Kosovan free-to-air television channel launched on September 21, 2000. It was founded by politician and journalist Veton Surroi as part of KOHA Group, a media house currently led by Flaka Surroi. Its programming is centered towards news, with Koha e Lajmeve being the most watched news edition in the country. The broadcaster shares its press staff with the Koha Ditore, a daily newspaper. Kohavision also runs Arta News, a 24-hour news and documentary channel. In October 2, 2024 the official YouTube channel of this television got terminated.

Television in Kosovo was first introduced in 1974. The Radio Television of Pristina was the first Albanian-speaking broadcaster in Kosovo, founded in 1974 following Radio Pristina's founding in 1945. It was forcefully shut down in 1990 by the Yugoslavian government, forbidding the flow of information through Kosovan airwaves during the Kosovo War. Baton Haxhiu is a Kosovo Albanian columnist and journalist who has worked for media such as Koha Ditore, Gazeta Express, Klan Kosova and ABC News Albania. He now works for Euronews Albania and is the general director of Albanian Post.

Classical music in Kosovo refers to the art music cultivated in Kosovo. The roots of classical music in Kosovo are found in the 1940s and include the time period from the times when Kosovo was part of Yugoslavia to this day. It can be said that there is a tradition of classical music in Kosovo, however, compared to other Balkan countries and especially European countries this tradition is younger. Classical music in Kosovo reaches back about 70 years. Even though in a short period of time, this music has evolved, passing through generations of composers and artists. In his book Albanian: Zhvillimi i stileve në veprat e kompozitorëve shqiptarë të Kosovës, Engjëll Berisha comments:

The diversity of styles in Albanian music [of Kosovo], its national patterns with sound idea-aesthetic foundations are a characteristic of the European musical reality, so many many works are of interest abroad, too, because during this relatively short period Albanian classical music in Kosovo has compensated for the delay in its development.
