Ballina Town F.C. is an Irish association football club based in Ballina, County Mayo. Their senior men's team play in the Mayo Association Football League. They have previously played in the Connacht Senior League. Their senior women's team play in the Mayo Women's Football League and have previously played in the FAI Women's Cup.

History

Early years

Ballina Town F.C. was founded on 8 December 1961 in Geraghty's public house in Ballina. Originally the club was named St Patrick's F.C. but six months later it adopted the name of its hometown. [1] The club subsequently joined the Mayo Association Football League and finished as runners-up in 1966–67. They were runners up again in 1973–74, 1974–75, 1985–86 and 1987–88. In 1976–77 they also won the Connacht Junior Cup. [2]

Connacht Senior League

Between 1989–90 and 1999–2000 Ballina Town's senior team played in the Connacht Senior League. In 1989–90, while playing in the CSL, Ballina Town became the first club from County Mayo to play in the first round of the FAI Cup. However they were defeated 4–0 by Shelbourne. Ballina Town were also runners-up to Mervue United in the 1992–93 Connacht Senior Cup. [1] [3] [4] [5]

Mayo champions

After finishing as runners-up in the Mayo Association Football League on five previous occasions, Ballina Town became Mayo champions for the first time in 1988–89. They then had to wait for twenty years before winning a second title in 2009. They retained the title in 2010 and won a fourth title in 2013. [2]

Women's team

Ballina Town also field a women's team in the Mayo Women's Football League. [6] They have also previously played in the FAI Women's Cup. [7] In 2007 Ballina Town also represented Ireland in a tournament in Italy, playing against teams from the host country as well as Iceland and Ireland. They finished fourth in the six team tournament. [8] In 2006 [9] and 2014 Ballina Town won the WFAI Intermediate Cup. In the 2014 final they defeated Douglas Hall 3–1 in the final at Turners Cross. Ground

Ballina Town play their home matches at Belleek Park which consists of two playing pitches and a flood-lit all-weather pitch. The main pitch is known as the Pete Murray Pitch. Thanks mainly to Irish National Lottery funding, work commenced in 2004 on new changing rooms at Belleek Park. This development was used for the first time in February 2006. The clubhouse was officially opened by John Delaney on 21 July 2008. Work commenced on an all-weather facility in Belleek in December 2010 and it was first used in January 2011. [1]

The FAI Intermediate Cup, also known as the FAI Umbro Intermediate Cup and the Pat O'Brien Intermediate Challenge Cup, is a cup competition organized by the Football Association of Ireland for intermediate association football clubs from the Republic of Ireland. These include clubs competing in the Leinster Senior League and the Munster Senior League. It was originally known as the FAI Qualifying Cup and from the beginning it has been used as a qualifying competition for the senior FAI Cup. It is currently sponsored by Umbro and has previously been sponsored by Carlsberg.

The Connacht Senior League was an association football league featuring amateur, intermediate, and League of Ireland reserve teams affiliated to the Connacht Football Association. It was a third level league in the Republic of Ireland football league system. An earlier provincial league, the Western League, had been active, on and off, since the 1930s before the Connacht Football Association decided to establish a more permanent league. The CSL was active between 1981 and 2000. In 2013 discussions were held about relaunching the league.

Galway Bohemians F.C. is an Irish association football club based in Galway. Their senior men's team competes in the Galway & District League. They have previously played in the Western League. The club was formed in 1932 and was originally put together as a representative team of a local youth league who wanted to enter a team in the FAI Youth Cup. In 1940–41 Galway Bohemians became the first club from Galway to reach the final of the FAI Junior Cup. Together with Castlebar Celtic, Galway Bohemians hold the record for winning the Connacht Junior Cup the most times.

Tramore Athletic F.C. is an Irish association football club based in Douglas, County Cork. Their senior men's team currently plays in the Munster Senior League. The club has previously played in the Cork Athletic Union League. They have also entered teams in the FAI Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup, the FAI Youth Cup and the Munster Senior Cup

Galway United Football Club is an Irish professional football club based in Galway. They play in the League of Ireland Premier Division following promotion from the First Division in 2023. They were founded as Galway Rovers F.C. during the 1930s. They made their League of Ireland debut in 1977–78 and changed their name to Galway United in 1981–82. After suffering financial difficulties, the club dropped out of the League of Ireland after the 2011 season but in 2014 Galway United returned initially playing as Galway F.C. for a season. St Francis Ladies Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Baldonnel, Dublin. It is the women's section of St Francis F.C. They have entered teams in both the FAI Women's Cup and the Dublin Women's Soccer League. They also represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2009–10 and 2010–11 UEFA Women's Champions Leagues.

St Catherine's Ladies Football Club is an Irish association football club originally based in St Catherine's Parish in the Liberties, Dublin. The club also plays home games in Walkinstown. St Catherine's have been FAI Women's Cup finalists on three occasions, winning the competition in 2011.

The Mayo Women's Football League is a women's association football league featuring teams from County Mayo. It is the sister league of the Mayo Association Football League. It has previously been known as the Mayo Ladies League. The league is a summer league, beginning in March and ending in September. In 2015 the league was sponsored by Artec Facilities Management, a company based in Belmullet. Teams from the league also compete for the Mayo Cup, the Mary Walsh Cup and the Mayo Shield. They also enter the Connaught Cup and the WFAI Intermediate Cup. The league's representative team won the 2006 FAI Women's Cup and then represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2007–08 UEFA Women's Cup.

Cora Staunton is an Irish sportswoman. She is best known as a ladies' Gaelic footballer, winning four All-Irelands and three Ladies' National Football League titles with Mayo. She has also been an All Star on eleven occasions. In addition to playing Gaelic football, Staunton has also played three other football codes at a senior level. In 2006, as an association footballer, she won an FAI Women's Cup winner's medal with the Mayo Ladies' League representative team. In 2013, she began playing rugby union for Castlebar Ladies in the Connacht Women's League. In she 2018 made her Australian rules football debut in the AFLW competition for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, establishing herself by 2022 as one of the league's all-time great goalkickers. She has also played for the Ireland women's international rules football team. Staunton works as a HSE liaison officer, working with women from the Irish Travellers community.

The Connacht Football Association is the governing body for association football in the Irish province of Connacht. It is affiliated to the Football Association of Ireland and is currently responsible for organizing the Connacht Junior Cup and four junior leagues – the Galway & District League, the Mayo Association Football League, the Roscommon and District Football League and the Sligo/Leitrim & District League as well as numerous other leagues and cup competitions for junior teams. In the past it has also been responsible for organizing the Connacht Senior Cup and the Connacht Senior League. However both of these competitions are currently inactive.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sarah Rowe</span> Irish female footballer

Sarah Rowe is a triple code sportswoman. She is a former Republic of Ireland women's association football international. In addition to association football, Rowe has also played two other football codes at a senior level. She has played ladies' Gaelic football for Mayo and women's Australian rules football for Collingwood in the AFLW. At club level, Rowe has played association football for Castlebar Celtic, Raheny United, Shelbourne, Bohemians in the Women's National League and for Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women. Rowe was a member of the Republic of Ireland U19 team that won their group at the 2014 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and qualified for the semi-finals. In 2016, she was also a member of the Shelbourne Ladies team that won a Women's National League/FAI Women's Cup double. In 2023, she returned to association football briefly playing for Melbourne Victory and then for Bohemians.
