Ballygunner (Irish : Baile Gunnair), [1] is a civil parish in County Waterford, Ireland. It lies on the southern outskirts of Waterford city.

The placename is derived, in part, from the Old Norse masculine personal name Gunnarr. [2]

Ballygunner contains several townlands: Ballygunner Mhór, Knockboy, Ballinakill, Grantstown, Williamstown and Ballinamuncha.[ citation needed ]

Main facilities in the parish are the local hurling club Ballygunner GAA, the adjacent St. Mary's National School and the 19th/29th Waterford St Mary's Ballygunner Scout Group. [3]

The 2022 All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship final was a hurling match that was played at Croke Park on 12 February 2022 to determine the winners of the 2021-22 All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship, the 51st season of the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship, a tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association for the champion clubs of the four provinces of Ireland. The final was contested by Ballyhale Shamrocks of Kilkenny and Ballygunner of Waterford.

The 2022 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship was the 122nd staging of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Waterford County Board in 1897. The draw for the group stage placing took place on 31 January 2022. The championship ran from 28 July to 11 September 2022.
