Balmoral Show

The Balmoral Show is Northern Ireland's largest agri-food event. [1] It takes place during May in Balmoral Park, Lisburn.

Sponsored by Ulster Bank, it typically includes showjumping competitions, motorcycle displays, bands, shopping, tasting, a children's farm, and displays of falconry, pedigree horses, ponies, cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs and goats. [2]

History

Formed in 1854, the North East Agricultural Association of Ireland held the first shows at Belfast Corporation Markets between 1855 and 1895. [3] In 1872, the first three-day show was held in Ormeau Park in association with the Royal Agricultural Society of Ireland. [4]

In 1894, the showgrounds at Balmoral were purchased and works were completed in time for the opening of the yearly Annual Show, subsequently renamed the Balmoral Show, on 30 June 1896. [5]

The King's Hall, Belfast opened its doors at the Balmoral site in 1934. In 2012, RUAS members voted to purchase and relocate the show to the site of the former HM Prison Maze, near Sprucefield, in Lisburn. [6] . The Royal Ulster Agricultural Society redeveloped the area of the site purchased into Northern Ireland's largest events venue, the Eikon Exhibition Centre.

In 2018, the RUAS celebrated the 150th Balmoral Show at the new Balmoral Park site. [7]

The event was cancelled in the years from 1915 to 1918 (World War I), from 1940 to 1945 (World War II) and in 2020 (as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Northern Ireland).[ citation needed ]

Casement Park Gaelic games stadium in Belfast

Casement Park is the principal Gaelic games stadium in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and serves as the home ground of the Antrim football and hurling teams. It is located in Andersonstown Road in the west of the city, and named after the republican revolutionary Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916). As of 2015 it had an official capacity of 32,282, with safety certification for 31,661, including 6,962 seated. As of 2021, the stadium was closed and in a state of dereliction, with redevelopment plans pending for several years. In July 2021, formal planning permission for the redevelopment of Casement Park was confirmed.

Belfast–Newry line

The Belfast–Newry line operates from Lanyon Place station in County Antrim to Newry in County Down, Northern Ireland. The manager for this line is based at Portadown railway station, although the line extends to the border to include the Scarva and Poyntzpass halts and Newry. Newry is on the fringe of the network, being the last stop before the border with the Republic of Ireland. The line follows the route of the northern half of the main Dublin–Belfast line, with the exception of calling at Belfast Great Victoria Street.

The King's Hall was a multi-purpose venue located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The King's Hall consisted of 6 event venues. The King's Hall is owned by the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS), who moved to the venue in 1896 from their previous showgrounds in Belfast Corporation Markets area. The RUAS subsequently moved out in 2012 and the venue has been abandoned since then.

Eikon Exhibition Centre

The Eikon Exhibition Centre in an events venue at Balmoral Park, Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The name comes from the Greek word "eikon".

Dennis Henry Osborne HRUA was a British artist and teacher who worked mainly in oil and watercolour. Osborne exhibited widely in Canada, Ireland and the UK. He was a follower of the Euston Road School and the Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. He was a Honorary Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts.

Jean Osborne was an artist from Northern Ireland who worked primarily in oils and watercolours.
