Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known by the honorific Bangabandhu, was a Bangladeshi politician, revolutionary, statesman, activist and diarist, who was the founding leader of Bangladesh. As the leader of Bangladesh, he had held continuous positions either as Bangladesh's president or as its prime minister from April 1971 until his assassination in August 1975. His nationalist ideology, socio-political theories, and political doctrines are collectively known as Mujibism.
Jahangirnagar University initially started as Jahangirnagar Muslim University is a fully residential public research university located in Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was established in 1970 by the Jahangirnagar Muslim University Ordinance of the Pakistani government, which was amended after the independence of Bangladesh to form the university. Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU) (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ মেরিটাইম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) was established in 2013, the 37th public university of the country. It is the first maritime university in Bangladesh, the 3rd maritime university in South Asia and the 12th maritime university in the world. It has issued its first calls for admission in December, 2016. The BSc in Oceanography program was started on 3 January 2017 at the university's temporary campus in Mirpur, as part of the first-ever launch of the Bachelor class in the university. Then in 2018, the first batch of BSc in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering classes started. Two more program classes started in 2019. LLB in Maritime Law and BBA in Port Management and Logistics. 2020 BSc in Maritime Fisheries first batch admission and classes start.
Sheikh Lutfur Rahman was a Bangladeshi serestadar, an officer responsible for record-keeping at the Gopalganj civil court in British India. His son Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh. Lutfar was also the paternal grandfather of Sheikh Hasina.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib was born on March 17, 1920, in Bengal Presidency.

Established in 2020, BSMRU is named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country's founding father. On 24 January 2020 in regular cabinet meeting, chaired by prime minister, agreed in principle to the Acts for the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj District. Z M Parvez Sazzad, a professor at the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) in Dhaka University, will serve as the founding vice-chancellor of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishorganj for the next four years starting from 27 January 2021.

The university was established by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University, Naogaon act 2023 in National Parliament.
