The Bangkok Insurance Public Company Limited is a Thai insurance company based in Bangkok. The company is one of the leading insurance companies in the country.

History

Bangkok Insurance PCL. was established on 15 April 1947 as Asia Insurance Co., Ltd. under the management led by Chin Sophonpanich, with a paid up capital of 5 million baht. Its office was located on Anuwong Road, Samphanthawong District, in Bangkok. [1]

Later in 1956, the company relocated to Asia Building on Suapa Road in 1956. In 1964, the company was renamed to "Bangkok Insurance Company Limited". A new office was constructed on Silom Road in 1968. The company was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand on 7 December 1978. [4] It was registered a public company in 1993. It moved to the business district at Bangkok Insurance Building on Sathon Tai Road in 1999. [1]

Chairman Chin Sophonpanich already requested the royal warrant of appointment for the company on 25 October 1976. King Bhumibol Adulyadej bestowed the royal Garuda emblem on 26 April 2004. The occasion and was an honour for the company, the Buddhist ceremony was attended by management and the staff. [1] The large Garuda statue at the headquarters symbolizes that privilege.

In 2010, the chairman and president was Chai Sophonpanich. [2] The registered capital was 760.5 million baht. [5]

Chuan Ratanarak was a self-made Thai businessman who built one of the largest and most powerful business empires in Thailand. Starting with nothing, Chuan was one of the legendary generation of Chinese merchants in Thailand to achieve success in one generation. By the time of his death in August 1993, age 73, Chuan was at the head of one of the three dominant business families in Thailand - the others being the Sophonpanich family and the Lamsam family - and the business group Chuan had created, the Ratanarak Group, included Thailand's most successful terrestrial broadcaster, a major retail banking and insurance group and the country's second largest cement producer. Comparing Thai and US entrepreneurs, Professor Krishnamra, Director of the Sasin Business School at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University, has said “given the size of the market and the stage of development, Chuan as an entrepreneur was comparable to the Vanderbilts or Rockefellers”. Chuan is the father of Krit Ratanarak and the grandfather of Chachchon Ratanarak.

Bitkub is a Thailand-based cryptocurrency exchange, operated by Bitkub Online Co., Ltd. under its parent group Bitkub Capital Group Holdings. It was founded in 2018 by Jirayut Srupsrisopa, and was among the first exchanges to receive a digital asset license from the country's Securities and Exchange Commission, in 2019. It claims to be the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country, with a share of 90% of crypto transactions based on 2021 data from regulated exchanges. In November 2021, SCB announced that it would acquire a 51-percent stake in the company for 17.85 billion baht, valuing the company at over $1 billion and making it one of Thailand's first unicorn start-up companies. However, on 25th August 2022, the deal was cancelled. The SCB stated that the reason for cancellation was due to Bitkub's ongoing lawsuit with Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission for the alleged involvement in wash and inside trading.
