Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) is the national association of Software and information and communication technologies companies in Bangladesh. [2]

History

Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) was established in 1997. [3]

In June 2016, Mustafa Jabar was elected president of BASIS after his Digital Brigade Panel won seven of the nine directorships. The elections at this point were held triennially. [4]

On March 27, 2018, it was reported that the Bangladesh government had repealed the election of BASIS, which had been scheduled for March 31. The move extended the tenure for six months of BASIS's executive committee. [5] Syed Almas Kabir was later elected president on March 31, 2018, when the elections were held anyway upon request of the commerce ministry. [6]

In April 2018, BASIS started the Commonwealth-SheTrades initiative, with funding from the UK Department for International Development. [7] In May 2018, the BASIS website was hacked by a Myanmar hacking group. [8] According to Al Jazeera in 2018, BASIS is "the biggest umbrella organization representing the country's IT sector." [9] BASIS has offices in Dhaka. [10]

In August 2018, BASIS publicly implored RAJUK to allow BASIS members operating software companies out of commercial zones to continue operating, noting that the commercial zones then open did not allow such companies to remain open all day. BASIS at the time said that 800 of its 1,100 members had offices in non-commercial areas. [11]

BASIS Outsourcing Award

The BASIS Outsourcing Award recognizes the outstanding performance of organizations and individuals in the field of outsourcing software and ITES services. In 2011, BASIS created the award. The program identifies the best performers in the outsourcing industry/community. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

ICT Award

In July 2017, BASIS created the National ICT Awards. [17] In July 2018, BASIS launched the second national ICT award. [18]

He achieved his PhD from University of Washington. After working 18 years as a scientist at California Institute of Technology and Bell Communications Research, he returned to Bangladesh and joined Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as a professor of Computer Science and Engineering. He retired from his teaching profession in October 2018. He is considered one of Bangladesh's top science fiction writers.

Bangladesh Export Import Company Limited, commonly known by its trade name BEXIMCO, is a Bangladeshi multinational conglomerate holding company, headquartered in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was founded in the early 1970s.

Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was a Bangladeshi politician and journalist who served as the senior assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and was convicted of war crimes during the 1971 Liberation war of Bangladesh. He was executed by hanging at Dhaka Central Jail at 22:01 on 11 April 2015.

RAJUK Uttara Model College (RUMC) is a co-educational College in Uttara, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is situated about a kilometer north of Shahjalal International Airport. Established in 1994, the institution teaches its students in Bengali and English under the Bangladeshi national curriculum. It has two recurring schedules: Morning and Day. Students are admitted into specific grades; according to the availability of seats, starting from the sixth up to the twelfth grade.

The International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh) (ICT of Bangladesh) is a domestic war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh set up in 2009 to investigate and prosecute suspects for the genocide committed in 1971 by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams during the Bangladesh Liberation War. During the 2008 general election, the Awami League (AL) pledged to try war criminals. The government set up the tribunal after the Awami League won the general election in December 2008 with a more than two-thirds majority in parliament.

Mohammed Nizamul Huq Nassim, was a judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He is the incumbent Chairman of Bangladesh Press Council. He chaired the panel of three judges that presided over the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal until his resignation on 11 December 2012.

The information technology sector in Bangladesh had its beginnings in nuclear research during the 1960s. Over the next few decades, computer use increased at large Bangladeshi organizations, mostly with IBM mainframe computers. However, the sector only started to get substantial attention during the 1990s. Today the sector is still in a nascent stage, though it is showing potential for advancement. Nonetheless, Bangladesh IT/ITES industry has fared comparatively well by achieving US$1.3 billion export earnings in FY 2020-21 and holding US$1.4 billion equivalent market share in the local market contributing 0.76 per cent to the GDP creating more than 1 million employment opportunities so far amid Covid-19 havoc that suddenly shattered businesses last year. Consequentially, riding on the successes of IT/ITES sector-supported export-led industries as well as pro-private sector and conducive policies pursued by Bangladesh Government, the country is now poised to become a Developing Country by 2026, as recommended by the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (UNCDP), besides, Bangladesh now seeks to transform itself into a knowledge-based and 4IR-driven cashless economy, aiming to become a developed country by 2041. Mustafa Jabbar is a Bangladeshi businessman, technology entrepreneur and a former Minister of Post and Telecommunication in the Government of Bangladesh. He also served as the president of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS). He is best known for the creation of Bijoy Bengali keyboard, which was developed in 1988, and it was most widely used Bengali input method until the release of Unicode based Avro Keyboard. He served as the president of Bangladesh Computer Samity, the national ICT organisation of Bangladesh for four consecutive periods. He is a champion of Bangla Bhasha Procholon Ain, 1987, and has been praised for promoting the Bengali language in the digital media.

The Fourth Hasina ministry was the 20th cabinet of Bangladesh headed by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina which was formed after the 2018 general election which was held on 30 December 2018. The results of the election were announced on 31 December 2018 and this led to the formation of the 11th assembly in the Jatiya Sangsad. The swearing-in ceremony was arranged in Bangabhaban in the Capital.

The Legacy Tower is an under-construction supertall skyscraper in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The skyscraper is a part of Bangabandhu tri-tower: alongside 71-floors Liberation Tower and 52-floors Language Tower and the centerpiece of US$12 billion central business district development project in Purbachal. The 111-floors tower will rise 468 m (1,535 ft) tall.

Canadian University of Bangladesh is a private university in Bangladesh. This university is known as "Canadian University". The university is affiliated to the University Grants Commission. Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat is the chairperson of the board of trustees. HM Jahirul Haque is the vice-chancellor of the university.

Suchinta Foundation is a Bangladeshi non-profit think tank and research centre. Mohammad A. Arafat is the chairperson of the foundation. Arafat is a teacher of Management at the Canadian University of Bangladesh. Rubel Ahsan is the vice-chairperson of the foundation. Tarik Hasan is the treasurer of the foundation.
