Bangladesh Jail is a law enforcement agency responsible for the management and security of jails in Bangladesh and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [1] [2] Inspector General of Prison Brigadier General ASM Anisul Haque is head of the force. [3]

The Bangladesh Jail manages 13 central jails and 55 district jails. [4] The Department of Prison operates seven divisional prison and 68 prisons. [4] Bangladesh Jail is under the Department of Prison which is under the Ministry of Home Affairs. [4]

History

Bangladesh Jail traces its origins to a Criminal Ward established in 1788 by the East India Company. [4] The company passed the Bengal Regulation III of 1818 for preventive detention. [4] The company built more prisons in 1986 in Comilla, Dhaka, Jessore, and Rajshahi. [4] The British Raj declared jail in Dhaka and Rajshahi to be the Dhaka Central Jail and Rajshahi Central Jail. [4]

Bangladesh jail was established in 1971, after the Independence of Bangladesh. They operate 13 central jails and 55 districts jails in Bangladesh. [5]

On 4 december 1975, four senior leaders of the Awami League were murdered in Dhaka Central Jail. [6] The four were former President Syed Nazrul Islam, former prime ministers Tajuddin Ahmed and Muhammad Mansur Ali, and President of Awami League Abul Hasnat Muhammad Qamaruzzaman. On 4 November 1975, jailer Aminur Rahman took the four from their separate rooms and placed them in one room. [7] Aminur told them an important representative of the Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad government would meet them. [7] Five Army officers led by Moslemuddin were refused entry to the jail by the Deputy inspector general of prisons but were eventually allowed following the orders of President Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad. [7] [8] The army personnel marched into the jail and shot the four leaders in their jail cell killing all except Muhammad Mansur Ali. After hearing the groans and Muhammad Mansur Ali call for water one of the prison guards, Motaleb, went and informed the army team who had returned to the entrance of the jail. [7] The team returned and bayoneted all four Awami League leaders in their jail cells. [7] It is observed as Jail Killing Day in Bangladesh. [9]

Dhaka Central Jail was the largest jail in Bangladesh, located in the old section of Dhaka, the country's capital. The jail has been used to house criminals as well as political prisoners, especially during the Language Movement of 1952, the 6 Point Movement, and the Bangladesh Liberation War. However, the jail earned infamy after the killings of four political leaders — A. H. M. Qamaruzzaman, Tajuddin Ahmad, Syed Nazrul Islam and Captain Muhammad Mansur Ali — on the eve of a military counter-coup on November 3, 1975, against the regime of president Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad and army chief Ziaur Rahman, which had seized power on August 15 after the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The slain leaders are mourned by many supporters in Bangladesh today, with the date informally known as "Jail killing day."

Syed Faruque Rahman was a coup member involved in toppling the Sheikh Mujib regime in Bangladesh. He was convicted and hanged on 28 January 2010 along with co-conspirators Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohammad Bazlul Huda in Dhaka Central Jail, Old Dhaka, for the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder and first President of Bangladesh. Syed Faruque Rahman and his close ally Khondaker Abdur Rashid were the chief organisers of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975. He was 2IC of the 1st Bengal Lancers Regiment of the Bangladesh Army who led a group of junior army officers in-order to overthrew the regime of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and installed Khondaker Mushtaque Ahmed as President of Bangladesh.

Abul Hasnat Muhammad Qamaruzzaman was a Bangladeshi politician, government minister and a leading member of the Awami League. A member of the Mujibnagar Government, Qamaruzzaman was murdered along with Syed Nazrul Islam, Muhammad Mansur Ali and Tajuddin Ahmed in the jail killings in Dhaka Central Jail on 3 November 1975 by a group of army officers on the instruction of President Mostaq.

Jail Killing Day is observed by the Awami League (AL) of Bangladesh and many other political organisations on 3 November every year. It commemorates the killing of four Awami League and national leaders : former Vice-President Syed Nazrul Islam, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Tajuddin Ahmed and Captain (Rtd.) Mansur Ali, and former Home Minister A H M Quamruzzaman on this date in 1975.

He is currently a fugitive, hiding in Canada. The Canadian government has refused to extradite him, because he faces the death penalty in Bangladesh.

Mohammad Bazlul Huda was a Bangladeshi Army officer who was convicted of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, president of Bangladesh. On 28 January 2010, Bazlul was hanged along with Syed Faruque Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Mohiuddin Ahmed, and A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed in Old Dhaka Central Jail.

The 7 November 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a coup d'état launched by left-wing army personnel in collaboration with left-wing politicians from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. The coup resulted in the death of Major General Khaled Mosharraf, who only 3 days prior, led a coup against those involved in the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During the coup, Ziaur Rahman was freed from house arrest, enabling him to seize power and become president.

The four were former President Syed Nazrul Islam, former prime ministers Tajuddin Ahmed and Muhammad Mansur Ali, and President of Awami League A. H. M Qamaruzzaman.
