The Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad is an annual mathematical competition arranged for school and college students to nourish their interest and capabilities for mathematics. It has been regularly organized by the Bangladesh Math Olympiad Committee since 2001. Bangladesh Math Olympiad activities started in 2003 formally. [1] [2] [3]
The first Math Olympiad was held in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Mohammad Kaykobad, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Munir Hasan were instrumental in its establishment. With the endeavor of the members of the committee, the daily newspaper Prothom Alo and the Dutch Bangla Bank Limited, the committee promptly achieved its primary goal – to send a team to the International Mathematical Olympiad. Bangladeshi students have participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad since 2005.
Besides arranging Divisional and National Math Olympiads, the committee extends its cooperation to all interested groups and individuals who want to arrange a Mathematics Olympiad. The Bangladesh Math Olympiad and the selection of the Bangladeshi national team for the International Mathematical Olympiad is bounded by rules set by the Olympiad Committee. The Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad is open for school and college students from the country. The competitions usually take place around December–January–February.
In the 2014 International Mathematical Olympiad, the Bangladesh team achieved one silver, one bronze and four honorable mentions, placing the country at 53 among 101 participating countries. [4] In the 2015 International Mathematical Olympiad, the Bangladesh team achieved one silver, four bronze and one honorable mention, finishing in 33rd place. [5] Ahmed Zawad Chowdhury, who previously won a silver and a bronze in 2017 and 2016, helped Bangladesh win a gold medal for the first time in the 2018 International Mathematical Olympiad. [6] He had previously missed a gold medal in 2017 by only two marks. [7]
The students are divided into four academic categories:
After achieving 1st gold medal in international Mathematics Olympiad in 2018, the competition spread all over the country. The organisers took selection round in 64 districts of Bangladesh in 2019. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this competition held entirely by online platform in 29 February. The selected participant of selection round can attend in regional competition.
The country is divided in 20 regions for the Regional Olympiad. In each division except Dhaka, nearly 60 students among 1000 participants are selected for the National Olympiad.[ citation needed ] In Dhaka, the number of participants is more than 3000 and 100–150 are selected for the National Olympiad.[ citation needed ] In all of the problems in the Regional Olympiad, only the final answers are necessary.
In the National Olympiad, the top 71 participants are given prizes. The time given for solving the problems depends on the category: 2 hours for the Primary category, 3 hours for the Junior category, and 4 hours for the Secondary and Higher Secondary category.
A group for the National Math Camp is selected from the winners of the National Olympiad.
For every year since 2005, Bangladeshi students have participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Samin Riasat and Nazia Chowdhury won bronze medals for Bangladesh in 2009. Dhananjoy Biswas won the first silver medal for Bangladesh in 2012. Ahmed Zawad Chowdhury brought the first and only (till now) gold medal for Bangladesh in 2018.

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is an annual competitive programming competition and one of the International Science Olympiads for secondary school students. The first IOI was held in 1989 in Pravetz, Bulgaria. It is the second largest science olympiad, after the International Mathematical Olympiad, in terms of number of participating countries. Each country sends a team of up to four students, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and guests.
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is a mathematical olympiad for pre-university students, and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads. It is “the most prestigious” mathematical competition in the world. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. It has since been held annually, except in 1980. More than 100 countries participate. The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual physics competition for high school students. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. The first IPhO was held in Warsaw, Poland in 1967.
Colonel By Secondary School is a high school in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is a non-semestered school, and was the only English public school in Ottawa that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma programme until Merivale High School began its IB programme in September 2019. The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is an annual academic competition for high school students. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. The first IChO was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1968. The event has been held every year since then, with the exception of 1971. The delegations that attended the first events were mostly countries of the former Eastern bloc and it was not until 1980, the 12th annual International Chemistry Olympiad, that the event was held outside of the bloc in Austria. Up to 4 students for each national team compete around July in both a theoretical and an experimental sections, with about half of the participants being awarded medals.

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is an annual mathematics competition held in Canada during the month of October. This competition is run by the Canadian Mathematical Society. Students who score exceptionally well on this competition are selected to participate in the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad.
The Czech Astronomical Olympiad is organised for pupils of elementary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic. It is very popular among younger pupils because of the opportunity it provides to use all informational resources. Practical observational tasks are required in the correspondence round. After the final round of categories "EF" and "CD", a two-day workshop is held to select candidates for the International Astronomy Olympiad. The Czech Astronomical Olympiad is supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports as a science competition in category A.
Milan Raspopović was one of the members of the commission for the establishment of Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade in 1963. He was the first MG physics professor from 1966, and the creator of the MG Physics Curriculum. He was also an MG professor of electronics, and MG principal and director, elected to office in 1970. Raspopović served in parallel as both principal and director of Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade for 32 years, until his retirement in 2002.
The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is a mathematical olympiad for girls which started in 2012, and is held in April each year. It was inspired by the China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO). Although the competition is held in Europe, it is open to female participants from all over the world, and is considered the most prestigious mathematics competition for girls. In recent years, participants from around 55 countries have been invited to the competition.
The United Kingdom Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO) is a linguistics competition for primary and secondary school students in the United Kingdom. The competition is divided into four levels: Breakthrough, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, collectively known as 'Round 1', with the top-scoring 5% of entrants at Advanced level eligible for a follow-on round, called 'Round 2' and selection for participation in the International Linguistics Olympiad, one of the international science olympiads. In 2009, teams from two schools competed in a pilot competition, with the winners taking part in the international contest as guests of the All-Ireland Linguistics Olympiad. In 2010, an independent olympiad was created and has taken place every year since.
Nairi Sedrakyan is Erdős Award 2022 winner Armenian mathematician involved in national and international Olympiads, including American Mathematics Competitions (USA) and IMO, having been the president of the Armenian Mathematics Olympiads, the Leader of Armenian IMO Team, a jury member and problem selection committee member of the International Mathematical Olympiad, a jury member and problem selection committee member of the Zhautykov International Mathematical Olympiad (IZhO), a jury member and problem selection committee member of the International Olympiad of Metropolises, the president and organizer of the International Mathematical Olympiad Tournament of the Towns in the Republic of Armenia (1986-2013). He has also authored a large number of problems proposed in these Olympiads. The government of Armenia awarded the author the title of the best teacher of Armenia and he received a special gift from the Prime Minister. Nairi Sedrakyan's son Hayk Sedrakyan is also a professional mathematician and former IMO competitor.
Cantonment English School and College is an educational institution located in Chittagong Cantonment, Bangladesh, near Chittagong Cantonment Public College.
Zhuo Qun Song, also called Alex Song, is a Chinese-Canadian who is currently the most highly decorated International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) contestant, with five gold medals and one bronze medal.
