Bangladesh Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Bangladesh Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (BDOAA) is an annual astronomical competition arranged for school and college students of Bangladesh to encourage their interest and capabilities for astronomy. Bangladesh Astronomy Olympiad activities started in 2007 formally. [1] [2]

Committees

The executive committee of BDOAA consists of Dr. M Arshad Momen and Dr. Khan Asad. [3]

The academic committee consists of Fahim Rajit Hossain, Md Mahmudunnobe, Turja Roy, Tahiatun Nahar Juthi, Md. Arman Hassan, Serat Mahmud Saad, Abdullah Al Rafi Mahmud, Adnan Bin Alamgir, Md. Bayezid Bostami, Hasnat Mohammad Nayeem, S M Toufiquzzaman, Shahriar Kabir Saaj, Ahnaf Islam Rakin, Aryan Andaleeb Azim and Nublat Hafsa Nidhi. [3]

The organizing committee consists of Shewa Al Mahera, Sadman Ahmed Sabub, Muntasir Morshed, Samin Nawal Khan, Taseen Mohammad, Aribah Ibnath Siddique, Md. Ashikur Rahman, Tasfia Nuzhat Aziz, S. M. Shafin Mahamood Akash, Oaseu Azad Jitu, S. M. Fuad Hasan and Sadman Shabab Azad. [3]

The advisory committee consists of Ahmad Abdullah Rifat, Fairuz Ishraque, Mohsinul Kabir, Dr. Tanvir Karim, Dr. Syeda Lammim Ahad, Nur Mohammad Imran, Akbar Ahmed Chowdhury, Arnab Chowdhury and Ronald Cruise. [3]

Achievements at IOAA

2023

The individuals who participated in the 16th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics are Hritom Sarker Oyon (Adamjee Cantonment Public School), Adnan Bin Alamgir (Dhaka Residential Model College), Bayezid Bostami (Rajshahi College), Adiba Amira (Mastermind English Medium School), and Fahim Rajit Hossain Shwadhin (EEE, Bangladesh Army University of Engineering and Technology) as the team leader. Hritom Sarker Oyon and Adnan Bin Alamgir won a silver medal each, with Bayezid Bostami winning a bronze medal. [7] [8]

2024

The individuals who participated in the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics are Sham-Un Muhebbo Sajid (Govt. Laboratory High School, Rajshahi), Tasdik Ahmed Tonmay (Govt. Laboratory High School, Rajshahi), Radh Chowdhury (Notre Dame College), Labib Bin Azad (Notre Dame College), and Sheikh Hasin Abrar (Notre Dame College). The mentors were Md. Mahmudunnobe (Wayne State University) and Fahim Rajit Hossain (Chalmers University of Technology).

Tasdik Ahmed Tonmay won a bronze medal. And Labib Bin Azad won an honourable mention. [9]

2025

Tasdik Ahmed won a silver medal. Farhan Sajid won the best group award. Faria Mahmud and Md Rokonuzzaman won honourable mentions.

Format

The first round is the regional round which is open for all Bangladeshi students above class six. Although K. Tausif Elahi from class five became a regional round champion in 2023. [5] Winners from the regional round participates in the national round which is held in Dhaka. The winners from the national round are trained in a camp where the representatives for IOAA are selected. [10]
