The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is an annual astronomy and astrophysics competition for high school students. It is one of the international science olympiads. [1]

Contents

The Olympiad was founded from a dissidence inside the International Astronomy Olympiad, in order to increase the scope of the organization.

  1. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IOAA 2020 was replaced by an online competition: the Global e-Competition on Astronomy and Astrophysics (GeCAA).
  2. The GeCAA was organized by the IOAA International Board with extensive support from the Estonian Astronomy Olympiad Committee.

The 1st IOAA-Jr, for the students under 16 years of age was held in Romania from 30 October to 7 November 2022. The 2nd IOAA-Jr was held in Volos, Greece from 24 to 30 September 2023, and its age restriction was lowered to students under 15. [3] The 3rd IOAA-Jr will be hosted by Kathmandu, Nepal from 3 to 10 October 2024.

Note: Several countries (e.g. India, Indonesia, Iran, Thailand) do not allow their students to contest in IOAA more than two times, even if they are eligible. Thus, statistics from those countries is not included in the table above.

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is an annual science competition for students aged 15 and under. It is one of the International Science Olympiads and an international academical competition that covers physics, chemistry and biology at the same time. The first IJSO was held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2004. Around 70 countries send delegations of three to six students, plus one to three team leaders, and observers.

Gyeonggibuk Science High School is a science high school in Uijeongbu, Republic of Korea, established in 2005. It was called Uijeongbu Science High School(UIS) before January 7, 2008. Some Korean students called GBS "Uigwak" which is from the pronunciation of UIS. There are about 230 students with most going on to university in the second year. GBS covers an area of 25,000 m2 with 18 classrooms and 16 laboratories. All students live in the dormitory, two students to a room.

The International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), one of the thirteen International Science Olympiads, is an annual competition for secondary school students that tests their abilities in disciplines such as geology, meteorology, environmental science, and terrestrial astronomy. Students who are winners of the respective national competitions are invited to participate in the IESO, and all interested countries are encouraged to contribute to the IESO. The IESO is one of the only three International Science Olympiads to include an International Team Competition.

The Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) is an annual physics competition for high school students from Asia and Oceania regions. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. It was initiated in the year 2000 by Indonesia. The first APhO was hosted by Indonesia in 2000.

The Sri Lankan Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad is a competition for Sri Lankan high school students on Astronomy and Astrophysics. It is the highest and the only government sponsored competition in the field of Astronomy, in Sri Lanka.

The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is an annual competition for 16- to 19-year-old geography students from all over the world. Students chosen to represent their countries are some of the best, chosen from thousands of students who participate enthusiastically in their own National Geography Olympiads. iGeo tests the abilities of every participant in spatial patterns and processes. Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) is an institute for research and technology transfer in Sri Lanka. It is named after its founder patron, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the famous British science fiction author, inventor and futurist. The institute is mainly focused on conducting research in the fields of electronics, micro-electronics, telecommunications, information technology, space technologies and robotics, and providing training for relevant industry professionals. It is one of the few institutions of this kind in Sri Lanka.

The Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) is an intergovernmental organization of the eleven Southeast Asian countries, which was formed on 30 November 1965 by the Kingdom of Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the then Republic of Vietnam. SEAMEO aims to promote regional cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture. The current SEAMEO President is Dr. Ethel Agnes Pascua-Valenzuela of the Philippines.

The OSN, previously KSN (Indonesian: Kompetisi Sains Nasional) is a science competition for Indonesian students held by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. This competition consists of a few competitions for elementary school (SD) students, junior high school (SMP) students, and senior high school (SMA) students.

The National Standard Examination in Astronomy or NSEA is an examination in astronomy and astrophysics for higher secondary school students, usually conducted in the end of November. Organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers in association with Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), NSEA is the first stage of selection of students in the IOAA. The NSEA is carried out every year since 1987 in English, Hindi & a few other Indian languages. About 16000 students from over 1,200 centres take part in these olympiads.

Thailand first participated at the International Science Olympiad (ISO)—a group of academic competitions for secondary school students—in 1989, when it sent representatives to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad in Germany. Since then, it has expanded to send representatives to every branch of the annual competition.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Expo 2025</span> World expo held in Osaka, Japan

Expo 2025 is an upcoming World Expo organised and sanctioned by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which will be held in Osaka, Japan. It will take place for six months during 2025, opening 13 April 2025 and closing 13 October 2025. It will be held for 184 days This will be the third time Osaka hosts a World Expo, having previously hosted Expo 1970 and Expo 1990. The event will return to its traditional 5-year scheduling cycle after the Expo 2020 was delayed to 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The projected visitor count is approximately 28 million.

Miss International 2019, the 59th Miss International pageant, was held on November 12, 2019, at Tokyo Dome City Hall in Bunkyo district Tokyo, Japan. Mariem Velazco of Venezuela crowned her successor Sireethorn Leearamwat of Thailand at the end of the event.
