Azad Jammu and Kashmir, abbreviated as AJK and colloquially referred to as simply Azad Kashmir, is a region administered by Pakistan as a nominally self-governing entity and constituting the western portion of the larger Kashmir region, which has been the subject of a dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947. The territory shares a border to the north with Gilgit-Baltistan, together with which it is referred to by the United Nations and other international organizations as "Pakistani-administered Kashmir". Azad Kashmir also shares borders with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the south and west, respectively. On its eastern side, Azad Kashmir is separated from the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir by the Line of Control (LoC), which serves as the de facto border between the Indian- and Pakistani-controlled parts of Kashmir. Geographically, the administrative territory of Azad Jammu and Kashmir covers a total area of 13,297 km2 (5,134 sq mi) and has a total population of 4,045,366 as per the 2017 national census.
Mirpur, officially known as New Mirpur City, is the capital of Mirpur district located in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It is the 2nd largest city of Azad Kashmir and 74th largest city in Pakistan.
The name Mangla (منگلا) is derived from the name of a small village that was situated in District Mirpur within the State of Jammu Kashmir. The village is located in the west of the foothills of Mangla's fort. It is surrounded on three sides by the semicurvature of river Jhelum flowing North to South. It is bordered with Jhelum district and with the right bank of Mangla between the State of Jammu Kashmir and Punjab province of Pakistan. Presently the word "Mangla", after the village had been razed to the ground, is used for a wide area which includes; Sultanpure, Mangla Colony, and Mangla Hamlet. The village Mangla itself was named after Mangla Devi,khokhar Rajput tribe lady. Mangla Devi was the daughter of Khokhar Kshatriya Raja Porus. It has been narrated to be the site of the crossing of the Jhelum river by the forces of Alexander the Great facing King Porus. At the time of construction of the Mangla Dam, the villages of SultanpureThill, Baral and Baruti across the river in Jhelum District were developed as residential colonies and offices for foreign workers and officials.
The Mirpur District is one of the 10 districts of Pakistan's dependent territory of Azad Kashmir. The Mirpur District is bounded on the north by the Kotli District, on the east by the Bhimber District, on the south by the Gujrat District of Pakistan's Punjab Province, on the south-west by the Jhelum District of Pakistan's Punjab Province, and on the west by Rawalpindi District of Pakistan's Punjab Province. The district is named after its main city, Mirpur. The Mirpur District has a population of 456,200 and covers an area of 1,010 km2 (390 sq mi). The district is mainly mountainous with some plains. The Mirpur District has a humid subtropical climate which closely resembles that of the Gujrat District and the Jhelum District, the adjoining districts of Pakistan's Punjab Province.

Khari Sharif is an agricultural area in Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Broadly speaking, Alaqa-e-Khari refers to the fertile plains of Khari which exist between the hills of Mirpur and the river Jhelum. Khari has some 80 small and large villages and one of the villages itself is known as Khari Sharif. It is located at a distance of 8 km from the city of Mirpur, Azad Kashmir and is known for housing the shrines of Sufi saints known as Pir Shah Ghazi Qalandar Damri Wali Sarkar and Mian Muhammad Bakhsh.
Chakswari (Chaksawari) is a Tehsil in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It comprises 15 Union councils including the Islamgarh Municipal Committee. Amongst the primary affectees of the Mangla Dam upraising project were Chakswari and Islamgarh. Chakswari is 26 miles or 41.84km from Mirpur. The political constituency code for Chakswari and Islamgarh is LA02.

Rajdhani is a union council in the Kotli District, Azad Kashmir, 40 kilometres (25 mi) west of the city of Kotli, the capital of the Kotli District and 64 kilometres (40 mi) north of Azad Kashmir's rapidly expanding model city of Mirpur. The Kotli-Mirpur Main Road passes through the village.
Islamgarh, known previously as Akalgarh is a Municipal Committee of Mirpur District near Mangla Dam of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It is located on the southern part of the Pir Panjal Range, about 28 Kilometer in North-East of Mirpur. It had a population of 25,651 in 2017.
Jatlan is a town situated in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It was at the epicentre of the 2019 Kashmir earthquake. Jatlan has many famous landmarks such as the Jatlan Head, which was built during the British colonial period. Jatlan is situated 5 miles from Khari Sharif and less than 90 miles from Islamabad. It is a state university and the President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir is the Chancellor of the university. The Vice-Chancellor is the executive head and manages the university functions.
The Mirpuri diaspora constitutes individuals with an origin in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, now living outside that district. Migration from Mirpur started occurring in the 1920s, when many Mirpuris left for Bombay to work on merchant ships. During the partition of British India in 1947, many Mirpuri Hindus and Mirpuri Sikhs were forced to flee to cities in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The 1947 Mirpur Massacre was the killing of thousands of Hindu and Sikh refugees in Mirpur of today's Azad Kashmir, by armed Pashtun tribesmen and local armed Muslims during the First Kashmir War. It followed the occupation of Mirpur by the raiders on 25 November 1947.

It had a magnitude of 5.6 Mw and a maximum felt intensity of VII on the Modified Mercalli scale. There was severe damage in Mirpur District, causing the deaths of 40 people and injuring a further 850. The epicentre of the shallow quake was near the city of Mirpur, Pakistan. The tremors were felt in the Kashmir region, Punjab (Pakistan), Punjab (India), Uttarakhand and northern parts of India including New Delhi.
Panjeri is a village in Bhimber District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It is equidistant between Bhimber and Mirpur - approximately 25 km either side. It has a population of 18,000. The village is a strong Rajput stronghold with most of the population being Rajput. Large numbers of the population are in the military and hold important ranks and regional roles. It has a Union Council of 39 sub-villages and is the most important Union Council of Bhimber District. Panjeri is known within AJK as "the land of war heroes".
