Baopals is an online shopping platform based in Shanghai, China, that enables users to shop from Taobao, Tmall and Jingdong (JD) in English. The platform serves as a bridge to products and sellers from these Chinese platforms, with information updated in real-time and translated to English. Product organization, customer service, payment, and delivery are geared towards non-Chinese users. The platform is accessible online as well through the company's official WeChat service account.

Contents

The platform organizes products into departments and subcategories, and features positively reviewed and trending products throughout the website and blog articles. Baopals currently operates out of the Jing'an District of Shanghai, with an office dog named Doge who was pictured in an article from China Daily about the benefits of having pets in the workplace. In October 2017, Baopals was the first foreign team to receive honors and win the “Top 10 Up-and-Coming Entrepreneurs in Shanghai” award — one of the longest running startup contests in the city held by the Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau. [2]

In a 2018 interview with CNBC, Baopals reported that over 2 million items had been sold on the platform, with a gross merchandise value of over US$14 million. [3]

Baopals began shipping internationally to regions outside of China in August 2021, and currently ships to over 40 regions throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.

According to the company as of November 2022, 5.8 million items have been sold on Baopals, with a gross merchandise value of US$53 million. [4]

History

Baopals was founded in Shanghai, China. After seven months of development, the platform opened to beta users in February 2016.

In an interview with China Daily, Charles Erickson said:

The idea was born out of necessity from all of us. I was always asking my Chinese colleagues to help me buy things on Taobao. So, we just wanted to figure out a way to do this independently. [5]

On the company's tech platform, Jay Thornhill said:

[People may] think that we’re hand selecting products from Taobao and Tmall, but our tech actually bridges everything over from Taobao and Tmall automatically, in real time. So all the products and sellers are there. [6]

In 2017, Baopals was the winner of the OTEC International Startup Competition and Shanghai Innovation and Startup Competition. According to a profile on Baopals from China Daily, approximately 25 percent of Baopals customers are based in Shanghai, 20 percent in Beijing, 13 percent in Guangdong, and the rest flow from other parts of China. In August 2021 the company opened up shipping to the United States. In July 2022, the company added shipping options to Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. [8] In October 2022 they began shipping to over 25 regions in Europe. [9]

Recognition

After launching in February 2016, Baopals was featured by local media in Shanghai. That's Shanghai wrote: "Worry no more, because Baopals was tailor-made for you. Is it Taobao translated into English? Well, yes, but you could just as easily do that on your browser. What Baopals does instead is reconfigure the interface, making it sleek and approachable, and compartmentalizing all that miscellanea into 16 categories. Game status: changed." [10]

In April, City Weekend (Shanghai) published a piece on Baopals, saying, "At long, long last: shopping start-up Baopals has cracked the world of Taobao and Tmall wide open for the expat community. Translating the treasure trove of these products into English would have been enough, but the company also offers phenomenally easy delivery and payment options that reflect the gradually opening Chinese market in which us expats participate on a daily basis. Unlike existing concierge services that act more as middlemen, the Baopals team wanted to provide a more independent shopping experience." [11]

In the following months Baopals was featured on the front page of Tech Crunch media partner TechNode, who wrote: "While a handful of expat entrepreneurs try to bring innovation from their country to China, this startup builds on the success of one of China’s largest companies and adapts it to expat tastes." An article published in March 2017 by City Weekend (Beijing) referred to the platform as "...a solution for those of us illiterate in Chinese." [13] A photo essay published in August by China Daily quoted Charles Erickson as saying, "When you return to the west, you realize that opportunities are still in China". [14]

In August 2017, 海豚视频 (Dolphin Video) published a comedic video [15] filmed at the Baopals office and co-founder's home outlining the history of the company and some of the crazier products available for purchase of the platform. Within the first 12 hours of publication the video received over 1 million views, peaking at 1.95 million two days later. Two more short videos were produced by Pear Video at the end of 2017, documenting and interviewing the Baopals cofounders as they attended an awards ceremony, worked in the office, exercised at the gym, and ate at a Chinese restaurant. Comedy series Mamahuhu featured a Baopals employee in a 2019 video titled "Average Day of a Chinese Office Worker in Shanghai." The video team followed Li Yi Xuan and her daily routine, with a look inside the Baopals headquarters on the day following the Singles' Day sale. [18]

The Singles' Day or Double 11, originally called Bachelors' Day, is a Chinese unofficial holiday and shopping season that celebrates people who are not in a relationship. The date, 11 November (11/11), was chosen because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick, which is Chinese Internet slang for an unmarried man who does not add 'branches' to the family tree. The four '1's also abstractly refer to the demographic group of single people. Ironically, the holiday has become a popular date on which to celebrate relationships: more than 4,000 couples got married in Beijing on this date in 2011, far greater than the daily average of 700 marriages.

Honglaowai, also known as Red Laowai, is an internet celebrity popular in China and within overseas Chinese communities. He quickly became famous as a Caucasian American singing Chinese patriotic songs in videos that he uploaded to numerous Chinese video-sharing sites like Tudou, Youku, 56, etc. Frequently featured on the front page of these sites, and attracting millions of views, he drew the attention of the media in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Americas, and Europe. He has given multiple interviews to newspapers and television stations and is a topic of discussion by the media.

Tmall, formerly Taobao Mall, is a Chinese-language website for business-to-consumer (B2C) online retail, spun off from Taobao, operated in China by Alibaba Group. It is a platform for local Chinese and international businesses to sell brand-name goods to consumers in Greater China. It has over 500 million monthly active users, as of February 2018. In the last few years, it has opened its features to brands, not only for online sales but also for developing brand awareness. According to Alexa Rank, it is the third most visited website globally in 2021.

Bilibili, nicknamed B Site, is a video-sharing website based in Shanghai where users can submit, view, and add overlaid commentary on videos. Bilibili hosts videos on various themes, including anime, music, dance, science and technology, movies, drama, fashion, and video games, but it is also known for its extensive kuso-style parodies by subcultural content creators. Since the mid-2010s, Bilibili began to expand to a broader audience from its original niche market that focused on animation, comics, and games (ACG), and it has become a major Chinese over-the-top streaming platform serving videos on demand such as documentaries, variety shows, and other original programming. Bilibili is known for its scrolling danmu commenting system. Bilibili also provides a live streaming service where the audience can interact with streamers. Bilibili also offers games, mostly ACG-themed mobile games, such as the Chinese version of Fate/Grand Order and Chinese Game Azur Lane. In the third quarter of 2022, the number of average monthly active users reached about 332.6 million, including 28.5 million paying users.

Liam Bates is an entrepreneur, television host and adventurer from Switzerland, born 28 June 1988. Bates' first appearance on Chinese television was during the 2010 Chinese Bridge language contest, in which he received first prize and the eloquence prize. The show aired in front of a TV audience of almost 300 million. Bates has gone on to present TV shows for the Discovery Channel and has founded several companies in China. In 2017, Bates made the Forbes 30 under 30 list.

Yanjing Beer 2016 Chinese FA Cup was the 18th edition of the Chinese FA Cup and the 60th anniversary of the Chinese National Cup. Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao beat the defending champions Jiangsu Suning on away goals in the final to win their second title.

Before becoming Alibaba's chief, Zhang was best known for his roles as CEO of Taobao and president of Tmall. AliGenie is a China-based open-platform intelligent personal assistant launched and developed by Alibaba Group, currently used in the Tmall Genie smart speaker. The platform was introduced in 2017, along with the Tmall Genie X1, at Alibaba's 2017 Computing Conference in Hangzhou.

Livestreaming e-commerce in China was initiated by fashion e-commerce platform Mogujie in 2016. In the same year, it was picked up and gradually made popular by Alibaba, who turned live commerce into a fixture in its annual Singles' Day shopping festivals.

Qianxun Group is a content livestream agency. It attained media attention for representing Viya, one of China's most popular influencers, noted for having sold a rocket for RMB 40 million during a live session in April 2020.

Chicecream is a Chinese premium ice cream company, known for its high prices and for being a home-grown Chinese luxury ice cream company as opposed to a Western import. Founded in 2018 in Shanghai, the company has focused on e-commerce and has become one of China's top-selling ice cream brands, growing in popularity partly with the help of Internet celebrities in the Wanghong economy.

Pandabuy is a Chinese e-commerce shipping agency website that ships manufactured products from China to the outside world. They are primarily known for shipping counterfeit consumer goods of designer clothing brands as well as expensive shoes made by companies such as Nike.
