The Barack Obama Democratic Club of Upper Manhattan is a reform-oriented political club in New York City focused on progressive activism and electing progressive candidates to local office. [1] The club serves the neighborhoods of Washington Heights, Inwood, and West Harlem/Hamilton Heights.

The Obama Club was founded in 2009 by Mark Levine, a Democratic District Leader and Northern Manhattan political activist. [2] The group emerged from the grassroots network of Upper Manhattan volunteers which coalesced around the 2008 presidential campaign of Barack Obama.

Since its founding the Obama club has become known for its ethnically diverse membership and its grassroots activism. Issues the club has focused on include immigration, [3] [4] affordable housing, economic justice, [5] and marriage equality. Club volunteers have helped elect [6] [7] a variety of progressive local candidates, including Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Sen. Adriano Espaillat, [8] [9] Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Comptroller John Liu, and Assm. Gabriela Rosa.

Grassroots Campaigns employs thousands of workers to generate small-donor contributions, increase visibility, and expand the membership base for a number of progressive groups, issues, and campaigns. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, the company was founded in December 2003 by a small team of experienced organizers who specialized in grassroots-level political and public interest organizing with groups like the Public Interest Research Group However, since its founding, it has consistently faced accusations of anti-union activity at odds with its stated progressive roots.

Guillermo Linares is a former Democratic member of the New York State Assembly who had represented the 72nd Assembly District in Manhattan from 2015 to 2016, and previously from 2011 to 2013. He is a former New York City Council Member and a former New York City Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs.

Organizing for America (OFA) is a community organizing project of the Democratic National Committee. Initially founded after the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama, the group sought to mobilize supporters in favor of Obama's legislative priorities, particularly health care reform. Eventually, the organization played a role in the midterm elections of 2010. Later, it became the grassroots arm of Obama for America. After Obama's second inauguration, it was reorganized as Organizing for Action and returned to its previous mission of organizing around the President's agenda. It has since turned into a hub of the Democratic protest movement.
