Baran (Somali : Baaraan) is a village in the Sool region of Somaliland. It is inbetween Las Anod, the regional capital of Sool, and Kalabaydh. The main road that runs from the regional capital to the southeast is named after it. It is primarily inhabited by the Baharsame subclan of the Dhulbahante. [1] [2] In 1906 Baran was made part of the Darwiish grazing ground. It is located a dozen or so kilometers to the west of Weylahed, the second Darwiish capital in 1901. [3] [4]
Sanag is an administrative region (gobol) in north eastern Somaliland. Sanaag has a long coastline facing the Gulf of Aden to the north, and is bordered by the region of Sahil to the west, Sool to the south and Somalia to the east. The region is disputed by the self-declared Republic of Somaliland and Puntland, a Federal Member State of Somalia. Its capital city is Erigavo. Reuters reports Dhahar as a Puntland town in 2021, but also reports how it condemns President Puntland and supports President Somalia. Somali Broadcasting Corporation reports in 2019 that Dhahar is a town effectively controlled by Somaliland. One Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, an NHS Foundation Trust in England, researcher describes Dhahar as a district in Puntland in 2014.
Taleh District is a district in the eastern Sool region of Somaliland. Its capital lies at Taleh, the former headquarters of the Somali Dervish State.
Sahdheer is a town in southern Sool region of Somalia.
Samala is located on the eastern outskirts of the town of Guumays in Sool, Somalia. It was the site of the first skirmish between Daraawiish and British forces when, on 30 May 1901, Eric Swayne's men attacked the Mahamud Garad tribe, one of the three major subclans of Dhulbahante alongside Farah Garad and Bah Nugaal. It was also the site of the first British-Darwiish battle on June 2. The adjacent town of Guumays has been described as a transit point for Ethiopians seeking to migrate to various locations eastwards of their own country.

The Battle of Tukaraq in 2018 saw the Somaliland National Army engage Puntland forces in Tukaraq, a town in the eastern Sool region, on the road between the regional capitals of Las Anod and Garowe. The ensuing heavy clashes resulted in Somaliland ousting the Puntland army from the town. The battle was significant as it was the first time both forces clashed directly.
The Somaliland National Army, is the land force and largest branch of the Somaliland Armed Forces is based in the Somaliland capital of Hargeisa. The Somaliland National Army is composed entirely of professionals and volunteers because the army is not mandatory for conscription. Some Somaliland battalions operate near the Puntland border due to a border dispute.
