Barbara A. Petersen is a Saint Thomian who served as administrator for Saint Thomas and Water Island, United States Virgin Islands from 2007 to 2015. [1] [2]

Career

From 1986 to about 1996, Petersen served as the regional director in the Midwestern United States for the Virgin Islands Tourism Department. [3]

Petersen worked as a manager for customer service and direct sales and then marketing specialist manager at Cardow Jewelers. [3] She also worked at Turbine Generator Maintenance Inc. as its regional sales coordinator, and she worked in marketing with two travel-related companies. [3]

Petersen was also co-host of the A.M.V.I. radio program on WVWI Radio One. [3]

On January 30, 2007, Governor John deJongh Jr. appointed Petersen, to serve as St. Thomas-Water Island Administrator. [3] She succeeded James O'Bryan Jr. [4]

In April 2017, Petersen was a Democratic candidate for the Legislature of the Virgin Islands. She came in fourth place. [2] [5] [6]

Petersen also serves as vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the Virgin Islands Humanities Council [7] and director of club administration of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II. [8]

De Jongh has been involved in community development, commercial banking, served on the boards of business and philanthropic organizations, appointed to government positions and elected to public office.

Juan Francisco Luis was a U.S. Virgin Islander politician who served as the third elected Governor of the United States Virgin Islands. He is the territory's 23rd governor overall. Luis assumed the governorship on January 2, 1978, succeeding Governor Cyril King, who died in office. He held the governor's office from 1978 until 1987, becoming the longest-serving governor in the history of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The 2010 U.S. Virgin Islands gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 2010, and won by incumbent Democratic Governor John de Jongh. De Jongh was elected to his first term in 2006 with 57.3% of the vote over Kenneth Mapp.

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people face certain legal challenges and discrimination not faced by non-LGBT people. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1985, but the Virgin Islands provides no protection against discrimination for LGBT residents. Following the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges on June 26, 2015, which found the denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples unconstitutional, same-sex marriage became legal in the islands.

Ethlyn Smith

Ethlyn Smith was a civil servant from the British Virgin Islands, who became one of the first two women elected to the House of Assembly of the British Virgin Islands. After a career of more than two decades as an accountant and public administrator in the civil service of the British Virgin Islands, Smith retired and entered politics. She contested her first election in 1995 as an independent, winning the 5th District. She was reelected to the post in 1999, serving until her defeat in the 2003 elections.
