Barbara Fontaine

Barbara Janet Fontaine (born 29 December 1953) is a British retired judge and solicitor. She served as Senior Master of the King's Bench Division from 2014 to 2023 and as the Queen's Remembrancer from 2014 to 2022 and as the King's Remembrancer from 2022 to 2023: she is the first woman and first solicitor to hold this ancient post. She was an articled clerk at Bird & Bird from 1976 to 1978, and then worked as a solicitor at Hill Dickinson, Coward Chance and Baker McKenzie. The King's Remembrancer is an ancient judicial post in the legal system of England and Wales. Since the Lord Chancellor no longer sits as a judge, the Remembrancer is the oldest judicial position in continual existence. The post was created in 1154 by King Henry II as the chief official in the Exchequer Court, whose purpose was "to put the Lord Treasurer and the Barons of Court in remembrance of such things as were to be called upon and dealt with for the benefit of the Crown", a primary duty being to keep records of the taxes, paid and unpaid.

Some judges with United Kingdom-wide jurisdiction also sit in England and Wales, particularly Justices of the United Kingdom Supreme Court and members of the tribunals judiciary.

A master is a judge of limited jurisdiction in the superior courts of England and Wales and in numerous other jurisdictions based on the common law tradition. A master's jurisdiction is generally confined to civil proceedings and is a subset of that of a superior court judge or justice. Masters are typically involved in hearing specialized types of trials, case management, and in some jurisdictions dispute resolution or adjudication of specific issues referred by judges.
