Barmer Boys is an Indian musical group produced by Amarrass Records. They belong to the Manganiyar Sufi Muslims community from Rajasthan

History

It formed in 2011 at the Amarrass Desert Music Festival. [1]

The group performed in India, Asia, Europe [2] and North America. [2] [3] They have been featured on MTV Coke Studio and released two critically acclaimed albums.

Music

The Barmer Boys blend traditional Sufi and gypsy folk music. [4] Their repertoire encompasses musical traditions from the religious and spiritual communities of the northwest Indian subcontinent region.

The Barmer Boys songbook reflects the influence of the Bhakti-Sufi movement of the 15th century. It takes the form of popular Kabir and Meera bhajans, as well as Sufi kalams. This is evident in tracks such as "Vaari Jaun", "Ranaji" and "Pir Jilani". They include songs that are typically performed at weddings and births in local villages and communities. The band's music incorporates elements such as beatboxing, electronic music, and DJs.

Members

The Barmer Boys is a trio: Manga (vocalist and harmonium), Sawai Khan (morchang, khartaal, bhapang and beatboxing), and Magada Khan (dholak). The group has had various percussion players take dholak duties, including Mangu Khan, Tarif Khan, Barkat Khan, and Rajak Khan.

Barmer Boys have performed on national [7] and international platforms across Asia, Europe and North America. International performances include Roskilde Festival (2014), where they earned the spot between OutKast and the Rolling Stones, [8] Wassermusik, Berlin (2015, 2017), Winnipeg Folk Festival (2015), [9] Ziro Festival of Music (2015, 2017), Music Meeting (2015), Feito A Man (2015), Clockenflap Hong Kong (2015), In2Wild Festival, UK, (2016), Festival 3 Culturas (2017) and Stockholm Cultural Fest (2017).

Notable collaborations

They have shared the stage with artists such as Bombino, Fatoumata Diawara, Vieux Farka Tourè, BaBa ZuLa, Estrella Morente, [1] and Khaled among others. Barmer Boys worked with Bollywood composer Clinton Cerejo on their song "Pir Jilani", [10] featured on MTV Coke Studio Season 3. Rais Khan collaborated with A.R. Rehman for musical recordings for MTV Unplugged in 2017 and featured on recordings by Mumford and Sons.

The group performed with various DJs, presenting a fusion of Sufi Gypsy folk techno with artists such as DJ HVAD (at Distortion Festival in Copenhagen), AudioPervert, Thee J Johanz and DJ Spincycle (Amarrass Records, at Stockholm Culture Festival, Gothenburg Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, [9] Flaunt@Harbourfront Centre and various events in Delhi). [11]

Barmer Boys is also working on a full-length release and a full-length live performance with Danish post-rock band Himmelrum. The two bands have performed live at various venues in Denmark [12] [13] and have released a single on bandcamp, "Nagma-Ranaji" (2018, Amarrass Records). [14]

Reception

The group's first album, At Home (2012, Amarrass Records), single-take field recordings made in the artists home in Barmer, received 4 stars in Songlines [5] and was described by Songlines Editor Simon Broughton as "Incandescent Sufi voices that incite ecstasy". Their second album, Kesariya Balm (2017, Amarrass Records), debuted on the Transglobal World Music Charts Top 40 in 2017. [15] Barmer Boys featured on BBC Asian Network, [16] [17] [18] BBC Hindi, and BBC World Service programming in 2015 and 2016, NPR Music in 2015, [19] and community radio stations WORT 89.9 FM Madison and WFMU 91.1 FM.

Aaj Rang Hai also known as Rang or Rung (transl. Color) is a Qawwali written by the 13th-century Sufi poet, Amir Khusrau in Hindavi and Braj Bhasha dialects. In the song, Khusrau describes to his mother his ecstasy upon finding his murshid in the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya. The song is a staple of most Qawwali sessions in North India and Pakistan, especially in the Chishti shrines of Delhi. It is traditionally sung as a closing piece at the end of a Qawwali session.

Monsieur Doumani Music band from Cyprus

Monsieur Doumani is a three-piece Cypriot band formed in Nicosia in 2011, winner of the "Best Group" award in the Songlines Music Awards 2019. Monsieur Doumani have performed in major festivals and venues in Europe, including WOMEX, WOMAD Charlton Park, Konzerthaus Vienna, Rudolstadt-Festival, Havana World Music Festival etc.

Ali Sethi is a Pakistani singer, songwriter, composer, and author. Sethi rose to prominence with his debut novel, The Wish Maker (2009). In 2012, Sethi began focusing on his musical career and made his film debut as a singer in Mira Nair's 2012 film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, with the song Dil Jalane Ki Baat Karte Ho. Dhruv Sangari also known as Bilal Chishty Sangari بلال ڇݜتى سنگارى is a Sufi and Classical Indian vocalist, composer, lyricist, savant and teacher. He is the son of well-known scholar and author Kumkum Sangari and noted painter Mahendra 'Manu' Sangari.

Mame Khan Indian playback singer

Mame Khan is an Indian playback and folk singer from Rajasthan, India. He has been playback singer for numerous Hindi films such as Luck By Chance (2009), I Am (2010), No One Killed Jessica (2011), Mirzya (2016) and Sonchiriya (2019). Khan was featured on Coke Studio @ MTV along with Amit Trivedi, the duo performed the track Chaudhary. He received the Best Folk Single Award at Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GiMA) 2016.

Bacha Nagma

Bacha Nagma is one of the major folk dance forms found in the Kashmir valley. It is also referred to as Bacha Gyavaun in certain parts of Kashmir. Afghans of Kabul are credited with the parentage of this dance. It is a derivative of the Hafiza Nagma. During the Bacha Nagma, a teenaged boy dressed as a girl dancer, who is trained in the Hafiza style of dancing sings Kashmiri Ballad and dances. This dance is popular in the villages, mainly at the harvest time. It is also popular for being performed in social gatherings and parties by young boys who disguise themselves as women in long skirts. Bacha Nagma is common in Kashmir during wedding celebrations and when the wedding processions are taken out on boats on the Jhelum river. This dance form is much appreciated and has the ability to engage large audiences. It is accompanied by instruments like rabab, sarangi, and drums. It involves quick spinning movements just like in the Hafiza dance form and some may even resemble those of kathak. The song-dance proceeding is known as Bach Nagma Jashan - Kid Dancer's Celebration. The dancer is known as The Bacha - the Kid - usually a thin and graceful boy/man who dances, sometimes comically, is always attired like a woman in a multi-colored frock-like dress.

The third edition of the Indian music television series Coke Studio India, titled as Coke Studio @ MTV, commenced airing on 17 August 2013 and concluded on 8 October 2013. The season returned with the previous year's format of multiple music composers producing their own songs. The season featured 13 music producers.
