Barry Kenneth Long (born January 3, 1949) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and coach.
Long was born in Red Deer, Alberta. He began his career with the Moose Jaw Canucks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and then played with the Central Hockey League's Dallas Black Hawks.
Coveted as a third-line defensive forward, Long signed with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League in 1972. Seeking a more offensive role, after two years with the team, he signed with the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association. He scored 20 goals in 1974–75 and was a second-team all-star for the league. After one more solid season with Edmonton, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. Long was again a second team all-star in the WHA's last year before its merger with the NHL. [1]
In the draft that followed the merger, Long was claimed by the Detroit Red Wings. After one year with this club, he returned to the Jets, playing one full season before suffering a career-ending injury five games into the 1981–82 campaign. Upon retirement, he became a Winnipeg assistant, and during the 1983–84 season, he became head coach. In 1984–85, Long's club finished with 96 points and won a first-round playoff series, but a poor start during the next campaign led to his firing after 66 games. [1]

The World Hockey Association was a professional ice hockey major league that operated in North America from 1972 to 1979. It was the first major league to compete with the National Hockey League (NHL) since the collapse of the Western Hockey League in 1926. Although the WHA was not the first league since that time to attempt to challenge the NHL's supremacy, it was by far the most successful in the modern era.
The Winnipeg Jets were a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. They began play in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972. The club joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 after the NHL merged with the WHA. Due to mounting financial troubles, in 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and became the Phoenix Coyotes. The team played their home games at Winnipeg Arena.
Richard Gary Bowness is a Canadian former professional ice hockey coach and player. He was selected in the second round, 26th overall, by the Atlanta Flames in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. Bowness has also played for the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and the original Winnipeg Jets. As a coach, Bowness has also served as head coach for Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, the original Winnipeg Jets, and the current Winnipeg Jets. He likewise held the position of assistant coach roles with the Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning and Stars.
The Indianapolis Racers were a major league ice hockey team that played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1974 to 1978. They competed in four full seasons before folding 25 games into the 1978–79 season. They played at Market Square Arena. They were the first professional team to secure Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
Randolph Robert Carlyle is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player. He is the former head coach of the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Toronto Maple Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks. He won the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Ducks during his first stint with the team. As a player, Carlyle dressed for over 1,000 games between the Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets, winning the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman in the 1980–81 season and serving as a captain of both the Penguins and Jets.
The 1979–80 NHL season was the 63rd season of the National Hockey League. This season saw the addition of four teams from the disbanded World Hockey Association as expansion franchises. The Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, New England Whalers, and Quebec Nordiques joined the NHL, bringing the total to 21 teams. The other two WHA teams were paid to fold.

Edward Joseph "Terrible Ted" Green was a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and player. Green played defence in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Boston Bruins and in the World Hockey Association (WHA) for the New England Whalers and Winnipeg Jets, and was noted for his physical play. Green served as a head coach with the Edmonton Oilers, and was an assistant coach with the Oilers and the New York Rangers.
Norman Steven Maciver is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player. He is currently an associate general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). As a player, he played defence for six teams in the NHL during a thirteen-year professional career.

James Gregory Kyte is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Kyte made history by being the first legally deaf National Hockey League (NHL) player, playing 598 games in the NHL.
John Augustus Ziegler Jr. was an American lawyer and ice hockey executive. Upon succeeding Clarence Campbell in 1977, he became the fourth president of the National Hockey League. Ziegler served as league president through 1992. His 15-year term was marked by the 1979 merger that integrated four teams from the rival World Hockey Association into the NHL, and by increasing labor unrest among the players. The first American to serve as chief executive of the NHL, he received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1984 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.

The 1979 NHL expansion, popularly referred to as the NHL–WHA merger, was the culmination of several years of negotiations between the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA). The result of the negotiations was that the WHA folded, and four of its six surviving teams - the Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets – entered the NHL as expansion teams who commenced play in the NHL in the 1979–80 season. The agreement officially took effect on June 22; it ended the seven-year existence of the WHA and re-established the NHL as the sole major league in North American professional ice hockey.
