The 2010 Winter Paralympics, officially the X Paralympic Winter Games, or the tenth Winter Paralympics, were held in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada from March 12 to 21, 2010. The Opening Ceremony took place in BC Place Stadium in Vancouver and the Closing Ceremony in Whistler. With a theme of "One Inspires Many," the Opening Ceremony featured over 5000 local performers. Fifteen-year-old snowboarder Zach Beaumont, who is an amputee, was the final torch bearer and lit the Games Cauldron. The 2 hours live ceremony was produced by Vancouver-based Patrick Roberge Productions Inc.
Australia has competed in every Winter Paralympics. In 1976, the first Games, Australia's sole competitor was Ron Finneran, but he was not an official entrant. In 1980, Kyrra Grunnsund and Peter Rickards became the first official competitors, in alpine and cross-country skiing. The number of Australian athletes increased to three, five, five and six at the next four games, respectively, and all of the athletes were alpine skiers. The participation decreased to four in 1998 and climbed back up to six in 2002. Australia won its first Winter Paralympic medals in 1992, and has medalled at every games since then. All of the medals have been won in alpine skiing.
Belgium sent a delegation to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 12–28 February 2010. The nation has been to every Winter Olympics except two, both in the 1960s. The Belgian delegation to Vancouver consisted of eight athletes, competing in four different sports. The delegation did not win any medals, and their best performance in any event was ninth by Pieter Gysel in the short track speed skating 1,500 meters event.
Jaba Gelashvili is an alpine skier from Georgia. He competed for Georgia at the 2010 Winter Olympics. His best result was a 50th place finish in the giant slalom.
Danko Marinelli is an alpine skier from Croatia. He competed for Croatia at the 2006 Olympics and the 2010 Olympics. His best result was a 32nd in the slalom in 2010.
Mattias Hargin, born 7 October 1985 in Stockholm, Sweden, is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Stockholm, he competed mainly in slalom, and is the younger brother of Janette Hargin, who also raced for Sweden. Hargin was married to Swedish alpine free-skier Matilda Rapaport, who died in an avalanche in Chile in July 2016.
Maxime Tissot is an alpine skier and soldier from France. He competed for France at the 2010 Winter Olympics where he finished 16th.
Shane O'Connor is a former alpine skier from Ireland who represented his country in five World Championships and one Winter Olympic Games. He competed for Ireland at the 2010 Winter Olympics, finishing 45th in the slalom.
Urs Imboden is an alpine skier who has represented both Switzerland and Moldova.
Eva-Maria Brem is an Austrian World Cup alpine ski racer, and specialises in giant slalom.
Tea Palić is a former Croatian alpine skier who competed in slalom and giant slalom. She competed for Croatia at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She finished 36th in the giant slalom, her only event at the Olympics.
Kim Sun-joo is an alpine skier from South Korea. She competed for South Korea at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was a 46th place in the slalom.
Sophia Ralli is an alpine skier from Greece. She competed for Greece at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was 47th place in the slalom.
Lizaveta Kuzmenka is an alpine skier from Belarus. She competed for Belarus at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was a 54th place in the giant slalom.
Kseniya Grigoreva is an alpine skier from Uzbekistan. She competed for Uzbekistan at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was a 58th place in the giant slalom.
Matea Ferk is a retired alpine skier from Croatia. She has competed for Croatia at both the 2006 and 2010 Olympics. Her best result in the Olympics was a 34th place in the slalom in 2010.
Karen Persyn is an alpine skier from Belgium. She competed for Belgium at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She finished in 27th place in the slalom, her only event of the competition.
Belgium sent a delegation to compete at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia, held between 7–16 March 2014. This was Belgium's eighth time participating in the Winter Paralympic Games. The Belgian delegation consisted of two athletes, Jasper Balcaen in alpine skiing, and Denis Colle, a snowboarder, which was considered a discipline of alpine skiing for these Paralympics. Their best performance in any event was 6th by Colle in the snowboard cross.
Romania competed at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia, held between 7–16 March 2014. This was Romania's second appearance at a Winter Paralympic Games. The Romanian delegation consisted of one alpine skier, Laura Valeanu, who finished fifth in the slalom and seventh in the giant slalom.
The Netherlands sent a delegation to compete at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia, held between 7–16 March 2014. The Netherlands delegation consisted of seven competitors, all of which were competing in sports under the alpine skiing banner. Bibian Mentel won the nation's only medal at these Paralympics, a gold in women's snowboard cross. With one gold medal, the Netherlands ranked a joint 14th place on the medal table with Switzerland.
