Bart Smit B.V. was a Dutch store-chain that specialised in toys, multimedia and electronics. [2]
The chain started on 1 June 1967 as a small store in Volendam. Bart Smit originally sold toys, household appliances and kitchenware. Later Bart Smit started focussing exclusively on toys. The name of the owner was Bart Smit, which is also the origin of the chain's name. Until 1995 the chain was known as "Speelgoedpaleis Bart Smit" (Toy Palace Bart Smit).
In 1985 Bart Smit was acquired by Blokker Holding. In 1999 Bart Smit started the daughter company E-Plaza, specialising in computer games. In 1989 Bart Smit opened its first shop in Belgium. [3]
In 2008 Bart Smit had 189 stores in the Netherlands, 51 in Belgium (of which 40 in Flanders and 11 in Wallonia) and one in Luxembourg. In 2017, Blokker Holding started converting all Bart Smit stores in the Netherlands to Intertoys stores. [4] This took longer than expected as some stores were too close to existing Intertoys branches. The Belgian branches were sold to and renamed Maxi Toys. Blokker Holding sold Bart Smit, Toys XL and Intertoys to British investor Alteri in October 2017. [5]

Makro is a Dutch international brand of warehouse clubs, also called cash and carry stores. Makro was founded by SHV Holdings, a Dutch conglomerate based in Utrecht in partnership with German company Metro AG, with the first warehouse club opened in Amsterdam in 1968. Currently, ownership of the worldwide chain of stores is split between different companies like Metro AG in Europe, SHV Holdings in Latin America and CP All in Asia. In many countries, access to stores is restricted to business customers, and the stores are not open to the general public.

Audax Groep is a Dutch print media and retail company, active also in Belgium. Its headquarters are located in Gilze. Audax was founded in 1958 by Jacques de Leeuw. Jacques de Leeuw led the company until 2017 when he was replaced by his son, Hubert de Leeuw. In 2019 he was replaced by Casper de Nooijer. In 2020, Hubert de Leeuw took over the lead again. In May 2021 Audax published an intention to sell off the Marskramer, Novy and Prima stores it had acquired in 2019. In August 2021, these were acquired by the toy chain Otto Simon.

Hubo is a Dutch hardware store-chain. Hubo Netherlands and Hubo Belgium are two separate entities. Hubo is part of the franchise-organisation DGN Retail, which headquarters is located in Apeldoorn. DGN Retail also owns the Hardware store-chains Multimate Service Bouwmarkt, Fixet and Doeland. Hubo is the oldest Hardware store franchise in the Netherlands, starting its franchising business in 1969. As of 2011 Hubo has over 200 stores, all of which are located in the Netherlands, making it the largest Hardware store-chain in the Netherlands in number of stores.
