The Basilicata regional election of 2013 took place on 16–17 November 2013.
A snap election was called upon the resignation of the incumbent President, Vito De Filippo of the Democratic Party (PD), on 24 April 2013 and the subsequent dissolution of the Regional Council. [1] Several regional ministers and councillors had been involved in an expenses scandal (and one minister and two councillors had been arrested). [2]
Vito De Filippo is an Italian politician and member of the Democratic Party. He has served as the President of the Italian region of Basilicata from May 6, 2005, until his resignation on April 24, 2013 during his second term.

Basilicata is a traditional stronghold of the PD, thus Marcello Pittella (a former Socialist and brother of Gianni Pittella, Vice President of the European Parliament) was elected President by a landslide 59.6% of the vote. Its main opponent, Tito Di Maggio of Civic Choice (supported by the whole centre-right, comprising The People of Freedom and the Union of the Centre), gained a mere 19.4%. The PD was the most voted party with 24.8%, followed by Pittella's personal list with 16.0%.

The Italian Socialist Party was a socialist and later social-democratic political party in Italy. Founded in Genoa in 1892, the PSI dominated the Italian left until after World War II, when it was eclipsed in status by the Italian Communist Party. The Socialists came to special prominence in the 1980s, when their leader Bettino Craxi, who had severed the residual ties with the Soviet Union and re-branded the party as liberal-socialist, served as Prime Minister (1983–1987). The PSI was disbanded in 1994 as a result of the Tangentopoli scandals. Prior to World War I, future dictator Benito Mussolini was a member of the PSI.
Giovanni Saverio Furio Pittella is an Italian politician who has served as Leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Group 2014 to 2018 and a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Italy 1999 to 2018. He previously served as President of the European Parliament from June 2014 to July 2014.

The Union of the Centre, whose complete name is Union of Christian and Centre Democrats, is a Christian democratic political party in Italy. Lorenzo Cesa is the party's current secretary; Pier Ferdinando Casini was for years the most recognisable figure and de facto leader of the party, before eventually distancing from it in 2016. The UdC is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) and the Centrist Democrat International (CDI), of which Casini was president from 2004 to 2015.
Primary elections were first introduced in Italy by Lega Nord in 1995, but were seldom used until before the 2005 regional elections.

The 2019 Basilicata regional election will take place on 24 March 2019. The election is for all 20 members of the Regional Council of Basilicata, as well as for the President of the Region, who is also a member of the Council. This election is the last one in Italy before the European election of 26 May 2019.
