Batavia was built at Topsham, England in 1802. At first she traded independently with the East Indies, but then she made three voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). Lastly, she made one voyage in 1818 transporting convicts to Australia. She was broken up in 1819.
Batavia was launched as Caroline, but was renamed shortly after her launch. [1] Batavia entered Lloyd's Register in 1802 with W. Norval, master, Hayman, owner, and trade London–Batavia. [5] Lloyd's Register for 1810 shows Batavia with J. Aitkin, master, changing to Mayne, Hayman, owner, and trade London transport. [6]
The EIC had Batavia measured before employing her. [2] She also underwent a thorough repair in 1810. Captain John Mayne acquired a letter of marque on 15 May 1810. [4] He would be Batavia's captain on all three voyages for the EIC. [2]
First EIC voyage (1810-1812): Mayne sailed from Portsmouth on 9 June 1810, bound for Ceylon, Bengal, and Batavia. Batavia reached Madeira on 26 June and Colombo on 21 November. She arrived at Calcutta on 19 January 1811. She continued her journey, passing Saugor on 5 March, reaching Penang on 16 April and Malacca on 11 May. [2]
The reason Batavia was at Malacca was that she served as a transport during the British invasion of Java in 1811. She was part of the second division, which sailed from Malacca on 11 June 1811. [7]
Batavia was at Borneo on 21 July, before arriving at Batavia on 4 August. She returned to Malacca on 30 August and Calcutta on 17 December. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 7 March 1812, reached Mauritius on 19 May and St Helena on 24 July. [2] In September Lord Eldon, Dorsetshire, Scaleby Castle, Batavia, and Cornwall were at 14°8′N28°11′W / 14.133°N 28.183°W on their way from Saint Helena to England and under escort by HMS Loire. [8] Batavia arrived at Blackwall on 30 October. [2]
Second EIC voyage (1813-1814): Mayne sailed from Portsmouth on 20 April 1813, bound for St Helena and Bengal. Batavia reached Madeira on 14 May and St Helena on 22 July. She arrived at Calcutta on 14 November. Bound for England, albeit not directly, she was at Saugor on 19 January 1814 and Ceylon on 13 February. She was at Bombay on 17 March and Tellicheri on 17 April. She stopped at Mauritius on 23 June and was at the Cape on 27 July. She reached St Helena on 5 September. On 13 October she had a skirmish with an American ship, but reached the Wight on 15 November. She arrived at Long Reach on 20 November. [2]
Third EIC voyage (1816-1817): Mayne left the Downs on 15 May 1816, bound for Bengal. Batavia reached Madeira on 25 May and Kedgeree on 24 September, and arrived at Calcutta on 10 October. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 28 December, Madras on 12 January 1817, and St Helena on 5 May. She arrived at Long Reach on 20 July. [2]
Supposedly, Batavia was then seen as unseaworthy and sold for breaking up. [1]
Captain William Lamb and surgeon J. Billing sailed from Gravesend, then Plymouth on 11 November 1817, bound for Sydney, New South Wales. Batavia stopped at Madeira leaving on 1 December, arriving on 5 April 1818. [3] She had embarked some 221 male prisoners and disembarked 218 in Sydney. [9] Detachments of the 34th and 46th Regiment of Foot provided the guard detachment. [10]
She left Port Jackson on 3 June 1818 bound for Bombay. [11] Batavia was forced to return to Sydney on 8 July, for repairs.
On 24 December 1819 Batavia's register was cancelled as demolition was complete. [1]
Baring was a three-decker East Indiaman that made six voyages to India for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1802 and 1814. Her owners then sold her and under new owners she made two voyages transporting convicts to Australia. Her last appearance in Lloyd's Register is in 1820.
Lord Eldon was a two-decker East Indiaman, launched in 1802 at South Shields, that made seven voyages as an "extra ship" i.e., under charter, for the British East India Company (EIC). Subsequently, she made one voyage to New South Wales transporting convicts. She was last listed in 1819.
Ann was built in Batavia in 1797. How she came into British hands is currently unclear. She first appeared in a register in 1802, and thereafter made a voyage for the British East India Company (EIC). In 1809 she made a voyage transporting convicts to New South Wales for the British government. On her return voyage she carried cargo for the EIC from Calcutta to London. She then became a West Indiaman, trading between London and Jamaica. Later she traded with Australia and India, and is last listed c.1865.
Tottenham was launched in 1802 and made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). Her owners then sold her and she became a transport. She made one voyage transporting convicts to Botany Bay. She was sold in 1820 for breaking up.
Ocean was launched in 1802 at Quebec. She made five voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC) between 1804 and 1814. Her owners then sold her and she continued to sail between Britain and India under a license issued by the EIC. In 1815–1816 she made one voyage transporting convicts to Australia. She was last listed in 1825.
Northumberland was launched in 1805. She made six voyages as an extra ship of the British East India Company (EIC), between 1805 and 1818. In 1810 and 1811 she served as a transport in the British invasions of Mauritius and Java. She was sold for breaking up in 1819.
Larkins made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), all as an "extra ship", i.e. under contract. On two of these voyages she first transported convicts to Australia. She also made one convict voyage independently of the EIC. She traded extensively between England and India or China, and in this twice suffered serious but not fatal maritime mishaps. In 1853 she became a coal hulk at Albany, Western Australia, and remained there until she was broken up in 1876.
Minerva was launched at Lancaster, Lancashire, in 1805. Following trading with Central and South America, she made two voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC) between 1811 and 1814. She also made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia between 1818 and 1824, one to Van Diemen's Land and three voyages to New South Wales. She was broken up in 1826.
Lord Keith was launched in 1804 by and for Peter Everitt Mestaer. He chartered her to the East India Company (EIC) for six voyages, and she then went on to make another two voyages for the EIC. On her second voyage, and unusually for an East Indiaman, she participated in the proceeds for the recapture of a former British Royal Navy brig and possibly in a skirmish with a French ship. On her third voyage she participated in a notable action. She was broken up c.1820.
Huddart was launched in 1803 as an East Indiaman. She made eight voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1803 and 1818. In 1810-1811 she participated as a transport in two British military campaigns. In 1818 new owners deployed her in sailing to Canada. She was wrecked there in 1821.
Phoenix was launched in 1804 as an East Indiaman. She made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1805 and 1819. In 1810 and 1811 she participated as a transport in two British military campaigns. She was broken up by 1821.
William Pitt was launched in 1805 as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1805 and 1819. In 1810 and 1811 she participated as a transport in two British military campaigns. She was sold for breaking up in 1820.
Boyne was launched at Calcutta in 1807. In 1809 she sailed to England. She was sold to the Danes, but by 1811 was under English ownership under the name Moffat. She then made seven voyages as a "regular ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). After the EIC exited its maritime activities in 1833–34, Moffat made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia: one voyage to Port Jackson and three to Van Diemen's Land. She also made at least one voyage carrying immigrants to South Australia, and later regularly traded between Liverpool and Bombay. She was last listed in 1856.
Fairlie was launched at Calcutta in 1810 and sailed to England. There she became a regular ship for the British East India Company (EIC). Including her voyage to England, she made four voyages for the EIC. From around 1821 on she became a Free Trader, continuing to trade with India under a license from the EIC. She also made two voyages transporting convicts to New South Wales (1834), and Tasmania (1852). She made several voyages carrying immigrants to South Australia, New South Wales, and British Guiana. She foundered in November 1865.
Lady Castlereagh was launched in 1803. She made six apparently uneventful voyages to India and one to China for the British East India Company (EIC). She left the EIC's service and made one voyage transporting convicts to Australia. She was returning from having delivered her convicts to Port Jackson and Van Diemen's Land when she was damaged in October 1818 a gale at Madras. She was surveyed there, condemned, and sold for breaking up.
Lady Lushington was launched in 1808. Then in 1809 the British East India Company (EIC) chartered her. She made four voyages to India for the EIC and several others while under a license from the EIC. She was on a voyage to India under a license from the EIC when she was wrecked on 10 August 1821.
Diana was launched in 1799 as a West Indiaman. From 1805 she made four voyages as an East Indiaman under charter to the British East India Company. She made a fifth voyage to India in 1817 under a license from the EIC. She ran into difficulties in the Hooghly River while homeward bound and was condemned in Bengal in June 1818.
Sovereign was launched at Rotherhithe in 1800 as a West Indiaman. The British East India Company (EIC) then took her up as an "extra" ship on several contracts; in all she made seven voyages as an East Indiaman for the EIC. After she left the EIC's service in 1817 she continued to trade with India, but under a license from the EIC. She was broken up in 1822.
Devaynes was launched in 1802 and made six voyages as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). She then made one more round-trip to India, sailing under a license from the EIC. She was condemned at Bengal in 1817 on a second licensed voyage to Bengal.
Carmarthen was launched in 1802 as an East Indiaman. She made eight round voyages as an "extra" ship for the British East India Company (EIC). On her first voyage she participated in an experiment in bringing variolation to India and other British possessions to combat smallpox. After leaving the EIC's employment, she took one more voyage to India, sailing under a licence from the EIC. She was last listed in 1820.
