Bayhealth Medical Center is a healthcare system serving the central and southern portion of Delaware in the United States.
Bayhealth Medical Center operates two hospitals: Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus in Dover and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus in Milford. In addition, it also operates the Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna in Smyrna. Bayhealth Medical Center also operates several outpatient facilities across central and southern Delaware. [1]
Bayhealth Medical Center has a total of 316 beds. Inpatient services include a birthing room and cardiovascular and cancer services. Bayhealth also offers numerous outpatient services, patient and family support services, community outreach, and imaging services. [2] The Kent Campus and Sussex Campus both have a 24-hour emergency department with a Level III trauma center. In addition, Bayhealth Emergency Center in Smyrna has a 24-hour emergency department. [3]
In 1921, the Dover Rotary Club launched a fund drive to build a hospital in Dover. The site was chosen in 1925 and Kent General Hospital (now Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus) was incorporated. The hospital opened in 1927. Over the years, Kent General Hospital has undergone numerous expansions and service additions to accommodate increasing admissions and to offer better services. The first cardiac surgery was performed at Kent General in 2004. Milford Memorial Hospital opened in 1938 and has undergone numerous expansions and improvements, including the addition of a cancer center in 2002 and an enlarged emergency services department in 2004. The Bayhealth Cancer Institute opened in 2008. In 2009, plans were made to replace Milford Memorial Hospital at its current site. [4]
On May 27, 2016, Bayhealth Medical Center broke ground on a new hospital campus at a new site in Milford that would replace Milford Memorial Hospital. The six-story hospital cost between $275 million and $300 million to build. [5] Bayhealth Sussex Campus, which is composed of Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus and Bayhealth Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus, opened on February 5, 2019. [6] Milford Memorial Hospital will be converted by Nationwide Health Services into a multi-use healthcare-focused community that would include a nursing home. [7]
Bayhealth was the owner of Greenwold (Dover, Delaware) at the time of its demolition. Bayhealth staff provided limited options to the community to try to save the house, insisting that it be moved off site for the creation of a staff parking lot. [8] Such actions run counter to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and this option was not pursued as the onus was placed on an all-volunteer preservation group, the Friends of Old Dover. Bayhealth demolished the house in 2023.

Delaware Route 1 (DE 1) is the longest numbered state highway in the U.S. state of Delaware. The route runs 102.63 mi (165.17 km) from the Maryland state line in Fenwick Island, Sussex County, where the road continues south into that state as Maryland Route 528 (MD 528), north to an interchange with Interstate 95 (I-95) in Christiana, New Castle County, where the road continues north as part of DE 7. Between Fenwick Island and Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Kent County, DE 1 is a multilane divided highway with at-grade intersections and occasional interchanges. The route heads north through the Delaware Beaches resort area along the Atlantic Ocean before it runs northwest through rural areas, turning north at Milford to continue to Dover. Upon reaching Dover, DE 1 becomes the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway, a freeway that is partially tolled. Between Dover and Tybouts Corner, DE 1 parallels U.S. Route 13 (US 13), crossing over and featuring interchanges with it multiple times. Past Tybouts Corner, the freeway heads north parallel to DE 7 to the northern terminus of DE 1 in Christiana. DE 1 serves as the main north-south state highway in Delaware, connecting the Delaware Beaches with the Dover and Wilmington areas.

Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital (NLFH) is a community-based hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois and a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, one of the nation's premiere academic medical centers. The hospital was established in 1899 as Alice Home on the campus of Lake Forest College, and in 1942 a new hospital was built in its current location as Lake Forest Hospital. The Blue Hen Mall is a defunct shopping mall on Bay Road in Dover, Delaware. The mall opened in August 1968, and was the main mall in the Dover area until the Dover Mall opened in 1982, leading to its decline. In the 1990s, the mall was converted into a corporate center. The mall has now been converted into a combination of medical care and state office facility. Tenants include DE Department of Labor, VA Outpatient Offices, and Bayhealth Medical Center.
