The Beacon Building is an office building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It is located in the Columbus Civic Center area, diagonal to Columbus City Hall. [1] The mid-century modern building was designed by Benham, Richards and Armstrong and completed in 1957. It was first owned by the Beacon Mutual Indemnity Co., and was sold in 1978 to the City of Columbus, which used it for government offices until 2018.
Construction began around 1955, with an expected opening on May 1, 1957. [1] The building was completed in 1957. It was purchased by the city in 1978 for just over $2 million. At this time, the city extensively renovated it, and it became home to five city agencies: the Departments of Community Services and Public Utilities, the Divisions of Electricity and Traffic Engineering, and the Civil Service Commission. [2] The city tried selling it five years later for $2 million, though there were no buyers. [3] It later became home to only the city's public service department. [4] By mid-2018, the department moved to the new Michael B. Coleman Government Center, and the city was looking to sell the Beacon Building to a developer. [4]
In 2014, most of the building's three decorative fins were removed. The aluminum fins were removed following a faulty bolt breaking in the wind. The removal work included a full exterior inspection, which found other deteriorated bolts, though no other damage. [4]
The Beacon Building was designed by Benham, Richards and Armstrong, a Columbus architecture firm. [1] It has six stories and 70,500 sq ft (6,550 m2). [3] The building was a notable entry in a Columbus Landmarks-hosted mid-century modern architecture survey in 2011–12. [5]
The building features numerous midcentury modern materials: a red granite tower and storefront base, Indiana limestone curtain walls, and three decorative aluminum fins. [5] The fins originally stretched parallel to each other from the first story to the sixth, in 5-foot sections, though most of the sections were removed in 2014. [4] The building's exterior features a large red neon sign on a corrugated teal backdrop, reading "BEACON BUILDING". All six floors have punched windows, connected by aluminum in a grid-like fashion. [6] The building has narrow hallways and ramps with unusual turns and corners, leading some offices to be large and others remarkably small. [3]

It is the primary museum for Ohio's history, and is the headquarters, offices, and library of the Ohio History Connection. The building also houses Ohio's state archives, also managed by the Ohio History Connection. The museum is located at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, site of the Ohio State Fair, and a short distance north of downtown. The history center opened in 1970 as the Ohio Historical Center, moving the museum from its former site by the Ohio State University. The building was designed by Ireland & Associates in the Brutalist style.

The Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad Station, today named Station 67, is a union meeting space and event hall located in Franklinton, near Downtown Columbus, Ohio. Built by the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad from 1895 to 1896, it served as a passenger station until 1930. It served as an office and shelter for Volunteers of America from 1931 to 2003, and has been the headquarters of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 67, a firefighters' union, since 2007. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. During its history, the building has experienced fires and floods, though its relatively few owners have each made repairs and renovations to preserve the building's integrity. The building is the last remaining train station in Columbus.
The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Building is a 16-story office high-rise building in downtown Flint, Michigan. It is the tallest building in the city. Designed by Wirt C. Rowland in 1928 and opened in 1930, it was built as the Union Industrial Bank Building to serve as the headquarters for Union Industrial Bank. Rowland was considered innovative for his use of two materials in the building's construction: Nirosta for decorative purposes in the public spaces and aluminum for its storefronts and window frames.
The Christopher Inn was a hotel in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The cylindrical mid-century modern hotel had 16 floors, 137 wedge-shaped rooms, and modern interiors at the time. It was built on the site of the Alfred Kelley mansion, which was disassembled in order to build the hotel. The Christopher Inn operated from 1963 to 1988, when it was demolished. The site is now used as a surface parking lot.
The Columbus Dispatch Building is a historic building on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The building was home to the Columbus Dispatch newspaper offices until January 2016, when it moved to 62 E. Broad St. on Capitol Square. A renovation restored the building closer to its original exterior appearance, while adding modern features. The building is now headquarters to the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. The building is owned by Capitol Square Ltd., a real estate and development branch of the Wolfe family’s Dispatch Printing Co., the former owners of the Dispatch.
