Beauty for Freedom is a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and funds to fight human trafficking. Some of its main programs include art therapy and photography for victims of trafficking.
Beauty for Freedom was founded in 2014 by Monica Watkins, Amer Nassar, Andrew Dorizas and Jerry Chu. [2] Watkins founded the organization after seeing the amount of human trafficking that took place in Haiti after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. [3] It was initially founded to raise awareness and funds for other non-profits involved in human trafficking rescue, but later expanded into its own programs involving art and photography. [2]
The organization is made up of people from various industries including fashion, art, and entertainment. [4] In 2015, it launched a creative arts program which sends artists to areas with youth affected by trafficking to conduct therapy art. The art has been used in collaborations with photographer Erica Simone. [4] A total of 15 artists took part in the program which was in partnership with Challenging Heights, with a final exhibit of the art being displayed in New York City. [5]
In addition to Challenging Heights, Beauty for Freedom has partnered with other organizations such as Parsons the New School of Design and Prinkshop. [6] It has provided services to more than 3,500 survivors of human trafficking as of 2021. It has also published two books and provided services for international missions in Ghana, India, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cambodia. [7]
The American Anti-Slavery Group (AASG) is a non-profit coalition of abolitionist organizations that engages in political activism to abolish slavery in the world. It raises awareness of contemporary slavery, particularly among the chattel slaves of Mauritania and Sudan, raises funds to support relief and aid to enslaved populations and escaped former slaves, and lobbies government officials to increase their efforts. V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls started by author, playwright and activist Eve Ensler. V-Day began on February 14, 1998, when the very first V-Day benefit performance of Ensler's play The Vagina Monologues took place in NYC, raising over $250k for local anti-violence groups. V-Day was formed and became a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to raise funds and awareness to end violence against all women and girls. Through V-Day, activists stage royalty free, benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues "to fund local programs, support safe houses, rape crisis centers, and domestic violence shelters, change laws to protect women and girls, and educate local communities to raise awareness and change social attitudes toward violence against women" during the month February, with most of the benefit productions taking place on or about February 14. Ensler has been quoted as saying that it was women's reactions to the play that inspired her and her colleagues to launch V-Day. The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina.
Sex trafficking is human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation. It has been called a form of modern slavery because of the way victims are forced into sexual acts non-consensually, in a form of sexual slavery. Perpetrators of the crime are called sex traffickers or pimps—people who manipulate victims to engage in various forms of commercial sex with paying customers. Sex traffickers use force, fraud, and coercion as they recruit, transport, and provide their victims as prostitutes. Sometimes victims are brought into a situation of dependency on their trafficker(s), financially or emotionally. Every aspect of sex trafficking is considered a crime, from acquisition to transportation and exploitation of victims. This includes any sexual exploitation of adults or minors, including child sex tourism (CST) and domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST).
Maiti Nepal is a non-profit organization in Nepal dedicated to help the victims of human trafficking. Currently, it operates a rehabilitation home in Kathmandu, as well as transit homes at the Indo-Nepal border towns, preventive homes in the countryside, and an academy in Kathmandu.
Voice of the Free is a non-profit, non-stock, and tax-exempt non-government organization in the Philippines, established in 1991. The A21 Campaign is a global 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to fight human trafficking, including sexual exploitation and trafficking, forced slave labor, bonded labor, involuntary domestic servitude, and child soldiery. The organization was founded by Christine Caine, an international motivational speaker, in 2008. The A21 Campaign aims to "abolish slavery everywhere, forever," and focuses on combatting slavery around the world through educational awareness and prevention, the protection of victims, the prosecution of traffickers, and various partnerships. The Children's Organization of Southeast Asia (COSA) was a nonprofit, non-government organization based in northern Thailand that worked to prevent human trafficking in surrounding regions.
