Rebecca Jane Thomas (born 24 December 1983) [1] is an Australian politician representing Elwick in the Tasmanian Legislative Council since the 2024 Tasmanian Legislative Council periodic election. [2] Prior to this she was Mayor of Glenorchy and a member of Glenorchy City Council. [3]
The Tasmanian Greens are a political party in Australia which developed from numerous environmental campaigns in Tasmania,including the flooding of Lake Pedder and the Franklin Dam campaign. They form a part of the Australian Greens.
The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament,the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital,Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs.
Glenorchy City Council is a local government body in Tasmania,and one of the five municipalities that constitutes the Greater Hobart Area. The Glenorchy local government area has a population of 50,411,covering the suburbs north of central Hobart on the western shore of the Derwent River,including its namesake suburb,Glenorchy.

The Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC),known commercially as MyState Bank Arena since 2021,is Tasmania's largest indoor arena,serving as Hobart's primary location for large indoor sporting events,functions and live entertainment. Commissioned by the Tasmanian Government and the Glenorchy City Council,the DEC served as the home arena for the Hobart Devils in the NBL from 1989 until 1996,when the team's licence was revoked. Subsequently,between 1997 and 1998,ownership was transferred entirely to the City of Glenorchy,where it became a financial burden and incurred significant maintenance expenses for Glenorchy taxpayers,while seeing limited use. As the largest enclosed multipurpose venue in Tasmania,the DEC has hosted many Australian and international musical acts,including Kylie Minogue,Bob Dylan,Carole King,The Corrs,James Brown,Leonard Cohen,Tina Turner,Blondie and The Beach Boys.
Sorell Council is a local government body in Tasmania,situated in the south-east of the state. The Sorell local government area is classified as rural and has a population of 15,218. The major centres of the region include Dodges Ferry,Dunalley,Primrose Sands and the principal town of Sorell.
The electoral division of Elwick is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. The division covers most of the municipality of Glenorchy.
The electoral division of Hobart is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It was originally created in 1856 when the Council became the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania. The seat was abolished in 1999 and re-created in 2008 after a redistribution saw the former division of Wellington returned to its former name.

Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 1 May 2010. The two seats up for election were Apsley,held by independent MLC Tania Rattray,and Elwick,held by retiring Labor-turned-independent MLC Terry Martin. These seats were last contested in 2004.

She represented the electorate of Denison from the 2018 state election until her defeat at the 2021 election,sitting with the Liberal Party until March 2021,when she quit the party and became an independent. Kristie Joy Johnston is an Australian politician. She was elected as the Mayor of City of Glenorchy in 2014 and 2018 and is an Independent member for the seat of Division of Clark,having been elected in the 2021 Tasmanian state election.
Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 7 May 2022. Two seats were up for a regularly scheduled vote;Elwick and McIntyre. Simultaneously a by-election was held in the seat of Huon,following the resignation of the incumbent member Bastian Seidel.
