Rebecca Whitley (born March 18,1980) is an American politician who has served in the New Hampshire Senate from the 15th district since 2020. A Democrat,she represents the state capital,Concord,as well as Hopkinton,Penacook,and Bow. [1]
Before serving as a senator,Whitley worked as an attorney for the New Hampshire Disability Rights Center,a consultant for the Environmental Defense Fund,and the Policy Director for the Children's Behavioral Health Collaborative. She resides in Hopkinton with her husband and son. [2]
Following Senate Majority Leader Dan Feltes' retirement to run for governor,Democrats including Whitley and former congressman Paul Hodes sought the Democratic nomination for his seat. In the September 8th primary,Whitley won the nomination. [3] She went on to win the general election. [4]
While in the Senate,Whitley has co-sponsored legislation to ban no-knock warrants, [5] limit the usage of school resource officers, [6] and increase the state minimum wage. [7] She supports reproductive freedom,the expansion of Medicaid,clean energy policies,and state education funding reform. [8]
For the 2020-2022 term,Whitley has been assigned to the Administrative Rules committee,the Health and Human Services committee,and the Judiciary committee. [9]

The State of New Hampshire has a republican form of government modeled after the Government of the United States,with three branches:the executive,consisting of the Governor of New Hampshire and the other elected constitutional officers;the legislative,called the New Hampshire General Court,which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives;and the judicial,consisting of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire and lower courts.
The New Hampshire Senate is the upper house of the New Hampshire General Court,alongside the lower New Hampshire House of Representatives. The Senate has been meeting since 1784. The Senate consists of 24 members representing Senate districts based on population. There are 14 Republicans and 10 Democrats currently serving in the Senate.
The New Hampshire Democratic Party (NHDP) is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Its chair is Raymond Buckley,and its vice chairs are Martha Fuller Clark and Bette Lasky. The most recent Democratic governor was Maggie Hassan,who served from 2013 to 2017.

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in New Hampshire,and the state began offering same-sex couples the option of forming a civil union on January 1,2008. Civil unions offered most of the same protections as marriages with respect to state law,but not the federal benefits of marriage. Same-sex marriage in New Hampshire has been legally allowed since January 1,2010,and one year later New Hampshire's civil unions expired,with all such unions converted to marriages. New Hampshire law has also protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation since 1998 and gender identity since 2018. Additionally,a conversion therapy ban on minors became effective in the state in January 2019. In effect since January 1,2024,the archaic common-law "gay panic defence" was formally abolished;by legislation implemented within August 2023.
