Belinda Kirk (born 1974or1975) [1] is a British explorer and entrepreneur. She is the founder of Explorers Connect, a social enterprise that connects people to opportunities for adventures and expeditions. In 2010, she captained the first all-female rowing team to circumnavigate Britain non-stop, completing the journey in 51 days.

Biography

At the age of 18, Kirk went to Tanzania to study monkeys. Afterwards, she travelled across Africa by herself, an experience which she says had a profound impact on her sense of self-confidence and outlook in life. [2] Among her other exploits, she has since traversed Nicaragua on foot, and searched for animal life in the Taklamakan Desert of China. [3] [2]

After working as a TV producer and director, Kirk decided to quit her job, instead focusing on finding ways to help people initiate their own trips and expeditions. “I worry that our society is not set up for adventures," Kirk says, "I’ve realised that we are very disconnected in the modern world from nature and challenge.” [2]

In 2009, Kirk launched Explorers Connect, a social enterprise dedicated to helping people find their own adventures both in the UK and overseas. Composed of both beginner and expert explorers, the enterprise had 25,000 community members by 2016. [3] Kirk has worked with TV adventurers Bear Grylls and Ray Mears. [2]

In 2010, [4] Kirk joined an all-female rowing team that called themselves the Seagals. Kirk acted as skipper, and her teammates included a Royal Navy nurse, an IT support manager, and the former US Marine Angela Madsen. [1] They entered the Virgin GB Row 2010, an event that challenged rowers to circumnavigate Britain. [4] The Seagals spent the full journey on board their boat, which was so small that only two people could sleep in the cabin at one time, and the teammates divided the rowing into two-hour shifts. [1] Kirk and her crew became the first women to row non-stop around Britain, completing the 2,101 mile journey in 51 days [3] [2] [1] and earning a place in the Guinness World Records. [5]

Kirk organized the first Wild Night Out in July 2017, a national day of outdoor adventure, with the aim of encouraging people to try new experiences. [2]

Kirk is a fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the British Exploring Society. [6] [7] [8] [9]

Family

Kirk's father Maurice Kirk, nicknamed the "Flying Vet", is a retired veterinary surgeon and amateur aviator. [10] In 2016, he participated in the five-week Vintage Air Rally, where vintage plane enthusiasts flew from Crete to Cape Town. Maurice made international headlines when his plane disappeared over Ethiopia, but he was found safe by search and rescue teams. [11]

Erden Eruç is a Turkish-American adventurer who became the first person in history to complete an entirely solo and entirely human-powered circumnavigation of the Earth on 21 July 2012 in Bodega Bay, California, United States. The journey had started from Bodega Bay a little more than five years earlier on 10 July 2007. The modes of transport included a rowboat to cross the oceans, a sea kayak for shorelines, a bicycle on the roads and hiking on trails, along with canoes for a few river crossings. The route he followed was 66,299 km (41,196 mi) long, crossed the equator twice and all lines of longitude, and passed over twelve pairs of antipodal points, meeting all the requirements for a true circumnavigation of the globe. Guinness World Records has officially recognized Eruç for the "First solo circumnavigation of the globe using human power" on a journey that lasted 5 years 11 days 12 hours and 22 minutes.

Jock Wishart is a maritime and polar adventurer, sportsman and explorer. Until his successful 2011 Old Pulteney Row to the Pole, he was best known for his circumnavigation of the globe in a powered vessel, setting a new world record in the Cable & Wireless Adventurer and for organising and leading the Polar Race.

Jessica Watson Australian sailor (born 1993

Jessica Watson is an Australian sailor who was awarded the Order of Australia Medal after attempting a solo circumnavigation at the age of 16. Although her voyage did not meet the distance criterion of 21,600 nautical miles (40,000 km) for a circumnavigation, Watson was nevertheless named the 2011 Young Australian of the Year and awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012 for "...service to sailing and to youth through the achievement of sailing solo and unassisted around the world [sic], and as a role model for young Australians". She currently resides in Melbourne. Netflix produced a film, True Spirit (2023), about Watson's voyage.

Zara Rutherford is a Belgian-British aviator. At age 19, she became the youngest female pilot to fly solo around the world and the first person to complete a circumnavigation in a microlight aircraft after a five-month journey which began in Kortrijk, Belgium, on 18 August 2021, and ended on 20 January 2022.
