Bell Top School was constructed in 1866. [2] It was originally a one-room schoolhouse, costing about $1,300 to build. Later, in 1940, Bell Top expanded into a multi-classroom building, as it still stands today. During this year, the school held its first open house, marking the newly developed building. [2]
The Nature Trail is an integral part of Bell Top School and is a National Wildlife Federation Certified Schoolyard Habitat. The trail allows students to observe seasonal changes and is home to a waterfall. On the trail, students are able to tap maple trees for sap. The sap is later boiled and turned into maple syrup in the Learning Barn. [3]
Bell Top is widely known in the North Greenbush and East Greenbush communities for its maple syrup production. The "Learning Barn" was built in 1997 by staff and the community surrounding Bell Top. In the barn, students participate in maple syrup production and apple cider pressing. The Learning Barn is available for other schools to use as well, not only Bell Top.
Maple syrup is a syrup made from the sap of maple trees. In cold climates, these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before winter; the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in late winter and early spring. Maple trees are tapped by drilling holes into their trunks and collecting the sap, which is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup.
