Bella Blue (born January 25, 1982) is an American burlesque dancer and producer. She is the founder and headmistress of the New Orleans School of Burlesque.
Bella Blue was born on January 25, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Barbara Leopold and Pedro Bendaña. [1] Her father, a Nicaraguan, immigrated to the United States with his mother, Yolanda, when he was five years old. [1] Blue's parents met in high school and later married. They divorced when she was two years old and her mother remarried. Her father worked as a barber. [2] Her mother died on February 20, 2010, from an aortic aneurism. [2]
Blue began studying dance when she was three years old. [3] She grew up in Belle Chasse and went to Catholic school until high school, when she switched to the public Belle Chasse High School, graduating in 2000. [4] She continued her dance training at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. [1]
Blue trained in classical ballet and modern dance techniques and worked as a teacher of ballet and modern dance prior to being introduced to burlesque in 2007. Blue auditioned for Trixie Minx's burlesque troupe Fleur de Tease, making her debut as one of their dancers in February 2007 under the name Jazzabella Blue, later dropping the "Jazza" from her name. [5] [6] Blue later quit her day job as a dental assistant and began dancing full-time. [1] She started her own burlesque troupe, The Foxglove Revue, and is the founder and headmistress of the New Orleans School of Burlesque. [7] She produces and directs the Dirty Dime Peepshow, Whiskey and Rhinestones, The New Orleans School of Burlesque Student Showcase, Strip Roulette, Legs and Eggs Burlesque Brunch, and several other large scale shows in New Orleans and the across the United States. [8] [6] [9] Along with burlesque, Blue has also previously worked as an exotic dancer and in 2017 became a certified yoga teacher. [10] [11]
In January 2015, Blue debuted sixteenth in the Burlesque Top 50 by 21st Century Magazine, consistently ranking in the top 20 for over three years. [9] [12]
In 2016, Blue was crowned the Unicorn Queen in the Chewbacchus parade during Mardi Gras. [13]
In 2008, Blue hosted a burlesque workshop in a dance studio on the West Bank of New Orleans. Eventually the workshop grew into New Orleans' only burlesque school, offering weekly burlesque classes. Students at the school are taught burlesque technique, character, costuming, and history. [14] Blue is the headmistress of the school and also teaches at the school. Blue was a producer of The Blue Book, a burlesque show at the club Lucky Pierre's on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. [6] After one of her dancers, Ruby Rage, was dismissed from performing at the club reportedly due to her body type and appearance, [17] Blue decided to cancel the show and leave Lucky Pierre's. [18] [19] Blue had not been informed of the club's decision to drop Rage until after she had been dismissed. [19]
Blue identifies as queer and was married October 2023 to Andrew Principe. [20] Blue has two sons, one of which was diagnosed with Aspergers. [21] [22]

Belle Chasse is part of the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. The population was 10,579 at the 2020 United States census. Belle Chasse is the largest community in Plaquemines Parish. It is home to Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, a Naval Air Station for the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Leslie Rosenthal Jacobs is an education reform advocate, business executive, and philanthropist. Born in New Orleans and a graduate of Cornell University, she built her family's small, independent insurance agency into one of the largest in the South, before merging the Rosenthal Agency with Hibernia National Bank. While President of Rosenthal Agency, Jacobs worked with the business community and the legislature to create the Louisiana Workers Compensation Corporation (LWCC) and served on its inaugural board of directors. The LWCC solved a state workers compensation crisis and today Louisiana has competitive and stable workers compensation rates. She went on to become a co-founder of Strategic Comp, a workers compensation insurance company that sold to Great American in 2008.
American burlesque is a genre of variety show derived from elements of Victorian burlesque, music hall, and minstrel shows. Burlesque became popular in the United States in the late 1860s and slowly evolved to feature ribald comedy and female nudity. By the late 1920s, the striptease element overshadowed the comedy and subjected burlesque to extensive local legislation. Burlesque gradually lost its popularity, beginning in the 1940s. A number of producers sought to capitalize on nostalgia for the entertainment by recreating burlesque on the stage and in Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1960s. There has been a resurgence of interest in this format since the 1990s.

Tabasco is a "burlesque opera in two acts" with music by George W. Chadwick and a libretto by R. A. Barnet. The work is written in a blend of styles including operetta, musical theatre, Victorian burlesque, and vaudeville. The opera was created without the knowledge of McIlhenny Company, maker of Tabasco brand pepper sauce since 1868. The company, however, subsequently approved its performance. The opera went on to tour the U.S. to critical acclaim, but disagreements between Chadwick and the opera's producer eventually derailed its success.

As a performer she is best known for her unique style of striptease combining comedy with classic burlesque. She is well known for her collaborations with musicians and charitable organizations as well as her devotion to preservation and growth of New Orleans arts and culture. She produces multiple New Orleans–based circus art and burlesque shows and designs custom entertainment for both public and private events.

There are two locations, the original bakery on Oak Street and a second location on Carondelet Street, which opened in 2020. Upon its opening in 2012, Breads on Oak was the first bakery and café in New Orleans to use only organic ingredients.
