On 20 November 2025, a grizzly bear attacked a school group in Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada. 11 people were injured, including three children and two in critical condition. [1] [2]
Around 1:00 pm on Thursday, 20 November 2025, a grizzly bear attacked a school group having lunch in the 4 Mile area of Bella Coola. [3] There were about 20 people in the group, which was from the Acwsalcta School, which is run by the Nuxalk Nation. [3] [4] The bear emerged from the forest and attacked the students; the teachers protected the students by using bear spray and a bear banger to drive off the bear. One male teacher was reported as getting "the whole brunt of [the attack]." [3] Two people were critically injured and two were in serious condition (an adult and three children), and seven others were treated at the scene. [5] [6]
As of Friday, November 21 the bear was still at large, with conservation officers working to locate it, and in the meantime residents were urged to stay away from the area. [7] Kevin Van Damme of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service described the attack as “extremely rare.” [7] On November 22nd, the search was expanded to include two other grizzlies that were seen in the area at the time of the attack.
