Bellevue is an Amerindian Kalina [2] village in the commune of Iracoubo, French Guiana.

Overview

Bellevue is an Amerindian village on Route nationale 1, approximately eight kilometres away from Iracoubo. [3] Its inhabitants were originally residing in Grosse Roche, situated by the Atlantic Ocean. However, in the 1950s, they were resettled in Bellevue. [1] While the village hosts a couple of shops, the closest accommodations can be found in Iracoubo. [4] The village has a school. [5]

The Kali'nas (also known as Galibis), residing in Bellevue, continue to uphold some of their traditional practices (fishing, danses). [6]

In 1997, Cécile Kouyouri made history by becoming first female Amerindian chief in French Guiana. [7] Moreover, in 2018, the village was allocated 1,000 hectares of communal land. [7]

Charles Poncet de Brétigny was founder and governor of the French colony of Cayenne, in what is now French Guiana, from 1644 to 1645. A brutal and despotic man, after just over a year he was murdered by a Carib, as were most of the other colonists. Accounts of the events and aftermath are somewhat confused, gathered from the few survivors several years later.

The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the French overseas department and region of French Guiana. The first five cases were found on 4 March and the first death was announced on 20 April 2020. On 30 April, the territory was green listed, because the pandemic appeared to be under control except for Saint-Georges. In June, the virus started circulating all over the territory.

Trou Poisson is a village in the commune of Iracoubo in French Guiana. The village is near abandoned, and has a cemetery for priests deported during the French Revolution.

Sainte-Rose-de-Lima is a village of Lokono Amerindians in the commune of Matoury in French Guiana. The village is located on the RN2 near Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport. It is the largest settlement of Lokono in French Guiana.
