Bello Bako Dambatta (born 15 December 1950 in Kano, Kano State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian chemist and university administrator. He served as the vice-chancellor of Bayero University, Kano from 1995 until 1999.

Education and career

Dambatta was born on 15 December 1950 in the city of Kano, Nigeria. [1] He began his higher education at Kaduna Polytechnic (1970–72), then moved to England, where he attended Huddersfield Polytechnic (1972–74), Trent Polytechnic (1974–75), the University of Bradford (1975–76), and Lancaster University (1980-83). [1] He completed his PhD at Lancaster University, with a thesis titled A study of the free-radical polymerisations of tri-n-butyltin methacrylate and i-vinylimidazole. [2]

He was appointed as a lecturer at Bayero University, Kano in 1978, and was promoted, reaching full professor in 1994. [1] He served as the head of the Department of Chemistry from 1991 until 1995, and was dean of the Faculty of Science from 1992 until 1995. [1] He was vice-chancellor of Bayero University from 1995 to 1999, [3] and was the first to be selected by the faculty of the university (previous vice-chancellors had been appointed centrally by the government). Dambatta became a fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria in August 1996. [1] [ better source needed ]

To honour and remember his work, the Bello Bakko Dambatta Lecture Theatre was named after him. It is located at the pharmacy department at the Bayero University Kano old site.[ citation needed ]

Ibrahim Khalil Umar is a Nigerian scientist and university administrator. He was Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria from 1979 to 1986. He holds a B. Sc. in physics and mathematics from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, a M. Sc. in physics from Northern Illinois University, USA and a Ph. D. (1974) in physics at the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. In 1976 he became the first Nigerian academic in physics to teach at Bayero University. In 1978 he served on the national constitutional assembly that drafted the Constitution of the 2nd Republic.

Attahiru Muhammadu Jega is a Nigerian academic and former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano. On 8 June 2010, he was nominated by then President Goodluck Jonathan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), subject to Senate confirmation, as a replacement for professor Maurice Iwu, who vacated the post on 28 April 2010. Jega was the only INEC chairman to oversee two Nigerian General Elections. Jega retired on 30 June 2015, handing over his position to Amina Zakari according to a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari.
