Albert James Wohlstetter was an American political scientist noted for his influence on U.S. nuclear strategy during the Cold War. He and his wife Roberta Wohlstetter, an accomplished historian and intelligence expert, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan on November 7, 1985.
An insurgency is a violent, armed rebellion against authority waged by small, lightly armed bands who practice guerrilla warfare from primarily rural base areas. The key descriptive feature of insurgency is its asymmetric nature: small irregular forces face a large, well-equipped, regular military force state adversary. Due to this asymmetry, insurgents avoid large-scale direct battles, opting instead to blend in with the civilian population where they gradually expand territorial control and military forces. Insurgency frequently hinges on control of and collaboration with local populations.
Counterinsurgency (COIN) is "the totality of actions aimed at defeating irregular forces". The Oxford English Dictionary defines counterinsurgency as any "military or political action taken against the activities of guerrillas or revolutionaries" and can be considered war by a state against a non-state adversary. Insurgency and counterinsurgency campaigns have been waged since ancient history. However, modern thinking on counterinsurgency was developed during decolonization. Within the military sciences, counterinsurgency is one of the main operational approaches of irregular warfare.

Martin C. Libicki is an American scholar and Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, California.
Frederick S. Pardee was an American economist, real estate investor and philanthropist from Los Angeles, California. An alumnus of Boston University, Pardee was one of the largest donors to the University. He was a researcher at the RAND Corporation from 1957 to 1971. In his life, he was a philanthropist and real estate investor who owned and managed apartment buildings in Los Angeles. He made charitable contributions to the RAND Corporation as well as several universities in the United States and a school in South Africa. His most prominent charitable gift was of US$25 million to Boston University for the establishment of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, named for him.
Gregory F. ("Greg") Treverton is an American foreign policy and intelligence executive. Treverton was the chairperson of the U.S. National Intelligence Council from 2014-2017 and vice chair from 1993-1995. He is also a professor at the University of Southern California and a visiting senior fellow at the Swedish Defence University.
