Ben Dragavon (born December 31, 1983) is a former American soccer player who is currently an assistant coach for Seattle Reign FC in the National Women's Soccer League. [1]

Career

Youth and College

Dragavon graduated from Monroe High School in 2002. In 2001, he backstopped the Bearcats to the Washington State 3A High School Championship. [2] He then attended Western Washington University, playing on the men's soccer team from 2002 to 2005. He finished his career at WWU with the team's all-time record in shutouts. He is also third on the school's list with a 1.38 GAA.

Professional

On July 20, 2006, the Seattle Sounders signed him as a back-up to Chris Eylander when the Seattle's backup goalkeeper James Ward was injured. [3] He played no games that season, but saw time in four games in 2007. On July 16, 2007, the Milwaukee Wave of Major Indoor Soccer League picked Dragavon in the seventh round of the 2007 MISL Supplemental Draft. However, he did not sign with the Wave. During the winter of 2007–2008, he played indoor soccer with the Seattle Wolves FC of the Premier Arena Soccer League. [4]

Dragavon signed a contract in early 2009 to become part of the Major League Soccer League-Wide Reserve Goalkeeper Pool. During the early part of 2009 he was called up by Seattle Sounders FC to provide cover for Kasey Keller while regular reserve keeper Chris Eylander was out injured. He made his MLS debut for Seattle on April 11, 2009, in a game against the Kansas City Wizards, when Keller was sent off for handling outside the penalty area. [5] He was on the bench for Toronto FC during their 5–0 loss to New York Red Bulls on October 25, 2009. [6]

In early March 2010, Dragavon pre-signed a two-year contract with the Aztex, against whom he made his USL debut in 2009, but he was released before the season started after failing his medical. [7]

Coaching

In 2012, Dragavon became the goalkeeper coach for the USL PDL club Seattle Sounders FC U-23. [8] [9] He made an appearance as goalkeeper for the Sounders U-23 team versus Washington Crossfire on May 31, 2013. [10]

In 2013, he became the goalkeeper coach for Seattle Reign FC of the National Women's Soccer League. [11] He became a full-time assistant coach in 2017. [12]

The 2009 Portland Timbers season was the ninth season for the club in the United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1), the second tier of the United States soccer pyramid. The first competitive game of the 2009 season was played on April 25 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC versus Vancouver Whitecaps FC which the Timbers lost 1–0. Following that loss the Timbers went on a 24-game unbeaten streak in the league on their way to securing the Commissioner's Cup for finishing the regular season atop the table. In a hard-fought, two-legged series, Vancouver Whitecaps FC knocked Portland out of the playoffs in the semifinals by an aggregate score of 5–4. In the U.S. Open Cup the Timbers hosted Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer in the third round but were eliminated by their bitter rivals 2–1 in front of 16,382 spectators at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon.

Seattle has had professional soccer clubs for over four decades who have played in various leagues since the 1970s. These include three incarnations of the Seattle Sounders, playing in the North American Soccer League, United Soccer League, and Major League Soccer. The city is also home to OL Reign, originally known as Seattle Reign FC, which began in 2013 as a founding member of the National Women's Soccer League. The 2009 Vancouver Whitecaps season was the club's 24th year of existence, as well as their 17th and 2nd last year as a Division 2 club in the franchise model of US-based soccer leagues. Vancouver was officially named an MLS expansion city on March 18, 2009. Following the end of the 2010 season, the Whitecaps FC joined MLS, becoming the second Canadian club and 19th overall to enter the league.

The 2007 Vancouver Whitecaps FC season was the club's 22nd year of existence, as well as their 15th as a Division 2 club in the franchise model of US-based soccer leagues. After their championship 2006 season despite a number of lingering injuries, the Whitecaps started well and led the league going undefeated until late May. However, with the sudden departure to England of starting goalkeeper Tony Caig and unexpected early season loss of Serge Djekanovic to MLS, the Whitecaps had goalkeeping instability as they gave significant minutes to four goalkeepers in 2007. The 2015 Austin Aztex season was the club's fourth season of existence. The club is now playing in the United Soccer League, the third tier of the American soccer pyramid. They were previously in the USL PDL the last 3 seasons, where they won the 2013 Championship, and the appeared in the Conference Finals in 2012 and 2014. The Austin Aztex will be competing in the Western conference and will be playing their first season in the newly dubbed USL. The season will begin March 21 and conclude on September 20.
