Ben Maidment (born 28 May 1988) [1] is an English rugby union player from Cuckfield, West Sussex. He currently plays for Jersey as a Number 8. [2]

Personal life

Maidment was educated at Brighton College [3] and the University of Cambridge, where he studied Economics and Land Economy. [4] His brother Max also plays rugby professionally. [5]

Club career

Maidment started playing rugby at Haywards Heath RFC while living in Sussex. He played in their colts team [6] as well as making the senior 1st XV. [7] He played for Haywards Heath in National League 3 London & SE. When he was 16, he was selected to play for Sussex. [8] While playing underage rugby at Haywards Heath he also played for Brighton College. While at university, Maidment was signed by London Wasps as part of a link-up with the University of Cambridge in 2010. [9] He played for London Wasps in their rugby sevens team and their "A" team. In 2011, after a recommendation from London Wasps, Maidment moved to Moseley Rugby Football Club and made his debut for them in the RFU Championship against Esher RFC. [4] In 2011, a day after his graduation from Cambridge, Maidment moved to Cornish Pirates. [10]

In 2013, Maidment moved to Jersey along with fellow Cornish Pirates players Aaron Penberthy and Grant Pointer. [8] During pre-season, he was sent off against Coventry R.F.C. and was banned by the Rugby Football Union for a week. [11] The ban was initially meant to be served during a friendly against French club, Le Rheu; however, this match did not go ahead. Jersey failed to inform the RFU and its officials that the ban was not served, and then fielded Maidment in their next match, against Plymouth Albion in the RFU Championship. [11] As a result, Maidment and Jersey were charged by the RFU for "failure to act towards the RFU with utmost good faith and/or conduct prejudicial to the interests of the Union and/or the Game". [11] The charge against Maidment was later dropped, but Jersey were fined £5,000 and deducted two RFU Championship points. [11]

Representative career

While at university, Maidment represented Cambridge in The Varsity Match at Twickenham Stadium against Oxford University. [12] Maidment was also selected to play for England Students. [4] In 2011, Maidment was invited to play for the Barbarians against Bedford Blues, a match which the Barbarians won. [13]

London 2 South East is an English level 7 Rugby Union League. When this division began in 1987 it was known as London 3 South East, changing to its current name ahead of the 2009–10 season. The division is made up of teams predominantly from south-east London, Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex. The twelve teams play home and away matches from September through to April. Each year all clubs in the division also take part in the RFU Intermediate Cup - a level 7 national competition.

Worthing Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team playing in the fourth tier of the English rugby union league system; National League 2 East. The first XV, nicknamed The Raiders, were runners-up to Henley Hawks in the National League 2 South 2012–13 season and qualified for a play-off against the runners-up of National League 2 North, Stourbridge winning 28 – 26. In doing so, the club became the first club from Sussex to play in the third tier of English rugby. The club also has a number of other teams, and while their 2nd XV is non-league, their 3rd XV currently plays in the Sussex Spitfire 1 league. Worthing also have a successful Ladies 1st XV who are currently in 2nd place in the National Challenge South East South 2 league

Regional 2 South East, previously known as London 1 South, is an English level 6 rugby union regional league for rugby clubs in London and the south-east of England including sides from East Sussex, south Essex, south Greater London, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex. When this division began in 1987 it was known as London 2 South, changing to London 1 South ahead of the 2009–10 season. It was the feeder league for London & South East Premier into which the champion team each season is promoted. The second-placed team entered a play-off against the runner-up of London 1 North. Three teams were relegated into either London 2 South East and London 2 South West depending on their location.

Hove Rugby Club is an English community rugby union club, who play at Hove Recreation Ground in Shirley Drive Hove, and are affiliated to the English RFU via the Sussex RFU. They currently play in London 2 South East - a league a level 7 of the English rugby union system - following their relegation from London 1 South at the end of the 2018–19 season.

Middlesex Rugby is the governing body for rugby union in Middlesex, England; Middlesex is a historic county of England that covers areas in the ceremonial counties of Greater London, Surrey and Hertfordshire. Haywards Heath Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team. The first XV currently plays in Sussex 2, the tenth tier of English rugby union competition. The 2013–14 RFU Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Greene King IPA Championship, was the fifth season of the professionalised format of the RFU Championship, the second tier of the English rugby union league system run by the Rugby Football Union. It was held between 14 September 2013 and 4 June 2014. It was contested by eleven English clubs and one from Jersey in the Channel Islands. The 2013–14 British and Irish Cup was the fifth season of the annual rugby union competition for second tier, semi-professional clubs from Britain and Ireland. Leinster A were the defending champions having won the 2012–13 Final with a 78th minute penalty by Noel Reid to beat Newcastle Falcons 18–17 at their home ground Kingston Park. There has been four different winners and four different losing finalists of the competition in the first four seasons of its existence.
