Timo Boll is a German professional table tennis player, who currently plays for Borussia Düsseldorf. His last rank before retirement was rank 23rd in the ITTF world rankings as of August 2024. Boll is the most successful German table tennis player of all time, having won several medals at Olympic Games, world cups, and world championships. He was ranked world No. 1 in 2003, 2011 and in March 2018.

Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hungarian athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games, except for two occasions. Hungary was not invited to the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, because of its role in the first World War, and was also part of the Soviet boycott, when Los Angeles hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics.

The opening ceremony flag-bearers for the United States were baseball player Eddy Alvarez and basketball player Sue Bird. Javelin thrower Kara Winger was the flag-bearer for the closing ceremony. For the third consecutive time in the Summer Olympics, the United States was represented by more female than male athletes.
Croatia's Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić defeated compatriots Marin Čilić and Ivan Dodig in the final, 6–4, 3–6, [10–6] to win the gold medal in Men's Doubles tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics. This was Croatia's first Olympic tennis gold and silver medals. For the first time since 1908, the gold medal match was contested by pairs representing the same country. It was both countries' first medals at the event since 2000, and Germany's first victory. In the bronze medal match, Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta defeated Serbia's Novak Djokovic, 6–4, 6–7(6–8), 6–3. Venus Ng Wing Nam is a Hong Kong table tennis player. Since 2007, she became a full time athlete in Hong Kong Sports Institute. Her highest career ITTF ranking was 28 in July 2014. She was the first local player to win medals at the Asian Table Tennis Championships and the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals.
