Guyanese Roman Catholic bishop (1927–2018)
Benedict Ganesh Singh (2 December 1927 – 12 September 2018) was a Guyanese Roman Catholic bishop.
Singh was born in Lusignan, Demerara, Guyana.[1] He obtained his Licentiate in Philosophy from the Urban University in Rome in 1951, and his Doctorate in Sacred Theology subsequently from the Pontifical Propaganda College in Rome in 1957 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1954.[2]
He served as titular bishop of Arsennaria and was auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Georgetown, Guyana, from 1971 to 1972. He then served as bishop of the diocese from 1972 to 2003.[3] He was the first native born Guyanese bishop.[2][4]
Singh received the Cacique Crown of Honour in 1993.[2]

It is nicknamed the "Garden City of the Caribbean." It is the retail, administrative, and financial services centre of the country, and the city accounts for a large portion of Guyana's GDP. The city recorded a population of 118,363 in the 2012 census.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge is a 6,074-foot (1,851 m) long floating toll bridge. It was commissioned on 2 July 1978. The bridge crosses the Demerara River 4 miles (6.4 km) south of the Guyanese capital Georgetown, from Peter's Hall, Demerara-Mahaica, East Bank Demerara to Schoon Ord, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, West Bank Demerara. There is a pedestrian footwalk. A raised section lets small vessels pass under. A retractor span lets large vessels pass.
The Railways of Guyana comprised two public railways, the Demerara-Berbice Railway and the Demerara-Essequibo Railway. There are also several industrial railways mainly for the bauxite industry. The Demerara-Berbice Railway is the oldest in South America. None of the railways are in operation in the 21st century.
The National Library of Guyana is the legal deposit and copyright library for Guyana. Unlike many national libraries, it is also a public lending library and the headquarters of Guyana's public library service, with branches extending throughout the country. Founded in 1909, the National Library of Guyana is situated on the corner of Church Street and Main Street in central Georgetown. In 2007, the library recorded a collection of 397,893 books and a total of 22,058 members. Its collection includes the papers of A. J. Seymour and Ian McDonald.
The Anglican Diocese of Guyana is one of eight within the Province of the West Indies. Its cathedral is St. George's Cathedral, Georgetown. The diocese came into being on 24 August 1842, when William Austin (1842–1892) was consecrated as the first bishop. Bishops who have served the diocese since then have included: Proctor Swaby (1893–1899), Edward Parry (1900–1921), Oswald Parry (1921–1937), Alan Knight (1937–1979), Randolph George (1980–2009) and Cornell Moss (2009–2015). The current bishop is Charles Davidson (2016–present).
Ptolemy Alexander Reid was a Guyanese veterinarian and politician who served as Prime Minister of Guyana from 1980 to 1984.
Andrew Morrison, SJ was a Guyanese Roman Catholic Jesuit priest, journalist, and pro-democracy activist.
John Peter Bennett was a Guyanese priest and linguist. A Lokono, in 1949, he was the first Amerindian in Guyana to be ordained as an Anglican priest and canon. His linguistic work centred on preserving his native Arawak language and other Amerindian languages; he wrote An Arawak-English Dictionary (1989).
St. Cuthbert's Mission is an Amerindian village on the Mahaica River in the Demerara-Mahaica region of Guyana. It comprises approximately 200 households. St. Cuthbert's is regarded by many people in Guyana as the "cultural capital" for Amerindians.
Sase Narain was a Guyanese politician and lawyer. He served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Guyana from 1971 to 1992, becoming the longest serving Speaker in Guyana.
Balram Singh Rai was a Guyanese politician. He served as Minister of Community Development and Education from 1959 to 1961, then the first Minister of Home Affairs from 1961 to 1962.
Doris Elrina Rogers was a Guyanese academic who specialised in fine arts. She was a professor at the University of Guyana from 1988 to her retirement in 2008, and a professor emeritus thereafter.
Sister Mary Noel Menezes OR was a Guyanese Roman Catholic nun and historian of Portuguese descent. She was involved with the University of Guyana from 1967 to her death in 2022, as a lecturer, head of department, full professor, and professor emeritus. She specialised in Guyanese history, particularly that of Amerindians and Portuguese Guyanese.
Mohamed Irfaan Ali is a Guyanese politician serving as the tenth and current president of Guyana since 2020. A member of the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), he previously served as the minister of Housing and Water from 2009 to 2015. He is the first Muslim to hold office, and is the second Muslim head of state in the Americas after Noor Hassanali of Trinidad and Tobago.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana was a part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Guyana on 11 March 2020. The first case was a woman who travelled from New York, a 52-year-old woman with underlying health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension. The woman died at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Juan Anthony Edghill is a Guyanese pastor and politician. He is the founder and presiding bishop of Zadok Ministers Fellowship. Edghill is also the current Guyanese Minister of Public Works in Guyana.
Kingston is a former village in Demerara. In 1837, it became a ward of Georgetown. The ward is located along the Atlantic Ocean coast. Kingston is home to many landmarks and historic buildings.
Austin House located in Georgetown, is the official residence of the Anglican Bishop of Guyana. The building is named after William Piercy Austin, the first Anglican bishop of Guyana.
