Benjamin Pulimood was the Director/Principal of the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.

Education

He passed out of the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1957 and joined Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, which was the premier medical institution those days. He went to England and got MRCP in 1962 from Edinburgh and later FRCP in 1973.

Physician

All along he was at the Christian Medical College, Vellore where he was a professor from 1969 to 1995. He was Principal during 1981 to 1987 and was director from 1987 to 1994. He was a venerated figure in Gastroenterology even before the advent of modern techniques like endoscopy, SCAN (Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry) and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Sportsman

He was a keen sportsman who had played as a goalkeeper in Santosh trophy tournament of 1954-55 and was also a member of the State team for the national hockey tournament in 1952 representing the State of Travancore-Cochin.

Other responsibilities

He was the president of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and chairman of the Kanigiri Hospital governing council. He represented the Mar Thoma Church in the World Council of Churches at Nairobi and is the recipient of the Manva Seva Award of the Mar Thoma Church.

Last days

He died in Vellore on Saturday 5 February 2011. The funeral was at Salem Mar Thoma Church cemetery at Kochi on Wednesday 9 February.

He was survived by his wife Dr. Ramani, (daughter of Rev. T.C.Thomas); a daughter Dr. Ansu and two sons Mani Pulimood and Dr. Thomas Pulimood. [1] [2]

Chaldean Syrian Church

The Chaldean Syrian Church of India is an Eastern Christian denomination, based in Thrissur, in India. It is organized as a metropolitan province of the Assyrian Church of the East, and represents traditional Christian communities of the East Syriac Rite along the Malabar Coast of India. It is headed by Mar Aprem Mooken, Metropolitan of India, who is in full communion with Patriarch Mar Gewargis III, head of the Assyrian Church of the East. Metropolitan is assisted by two Bishops, Mar Yohannan Yoseph, and Mar Awgin Kuriakose.

Council of Christian Hospitals

Council of Christian Hospitals (COCH), an autonomous body that facilitates management of medical institutions founded by Missionaries of Canadian Baptist Mission. COCH is a body corporate under Indian Societies Registration Act and has its registered office in premises of one of its participating hospitals, that is, CBM Christian Medical Centre, Pithapuram in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.

Maramon Convention

The Maramon Convention, one of the largest Christian convention in Asia, is held at Maramon, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India annually in February on the vast sand-bed of the Pampa River next to the Kozhencherry Bridge. It is organised by Mar Thoma Evangelistic Association, the missionary wing of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church.

Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Metropolitan Emeritus of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India

Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, is an Indian prelate and the emeritus Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, and has been a bishop for 67 years, 8 months and 2 days. He is addressed and referred to as Chrysostom Thirumeni or Valiya Thirumeni. He was awarded India's third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, in 2018.

Alexander Mar Thoma Metropolitan was the head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church with its center in Kerala state in south-western India.

Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan was the Head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church from 1949–1976, who gave leadership to the church and at the same time actively participated in social and political arenas. He was respected by people from all walks of life, from all religions and from all age groups. He is remembered for providing the church with the motto Lighted to Lighten. "The Church must be interested where human life is interested," was his motto.

Abraham Mar Thoma Metropolitan was the Head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church from 1944–1947. He was called Maret Kochu Thirumeni by his people. Among the bishops of Malankara Churches Including Mar Thoma Church, Abraham Mar Thoma was the first to earn a Doctoral degree.

Titus II Mar Thoma Metropolitan was the head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church with its center in Kerala state in south-western India. He was known as Thithoos Dwitheeyan Mar Thoma Metropolitan among his people.

Titus I Mar Thoma Metropolitan was known as Thithoos Mar Thoma Metropolitan was the first Marthoma Metropolitan (1893–1909) after the reformation of the Malankara Church.

The Diocese of North America & Europe is a diocese of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church that includes all the Mar Thoma parishes in the North American and European continents. Its headquarters is at Sinai Mar Thoma Centre, Merrick, New York.The present Diocesan bishop is His Lordship Dr Issac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa. As of 2020 there are 71 parishes and 7 congregations under this diocese.

St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry is Government aided college in Kozhencherry, Kerala state, South India. Established in 1953, it is administered by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. Most Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan and Rev. K. T. Thomas, Kurumthottickal, the veteran Minister of the Parish of Kozhencherry were involved in founding the college. Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan, the present head of the Mar Thoma Church, is the manager of the college.
