Benon Mugumbya is a Ugandan musician [1] and music producer. [2] He was one half of the singing duo "Benon and Vamposs". [3] He is the founder of Swangz Avenue. [4]

Early life and education

Benon Mugumbya was born on 13 December 1980 to Benon Mugumbya and Florence Mugumbya. His father died two weeks before he was born. He started singing and performing in his primary school days at Budo Junior School, active in the school choir and drama club both in his O-level at Ndejje Secondary and A-Level at Namasagali college. It’s here that he met Elvis Kirya who later adopted a stage name Vamposs. The duo joined voices right from school and launched their career as ‘Benon & Vamposs’ with help from a friend, mentor and producer, Steve Jean in 2001. [5] [6]

Over time Benon developed a passion for producing music. However, with very little skills in playing any musical instrument it wasn’t going to be easy but the mentorship from producers Aydee and Pato helped a great deal. he learnt a lot from these two while working at their Goodenuff studios in Makindye and in 2006 he was offered a job at Fenon records where he worked with Producer Steve Jean. Two years later, Benon started his own studio Swangz Avenue working/producing songs for artists like Blu 3, Radio and Weasle, Juliana, GNL, Mun G, Bobi Wine, Irene Namubiru, Navio, Vamposs, Lillian Mbabazi, Michael Ross, Viboyo, Rabadaba, Bebe Cool, Aziz Azion, Keko and many more bringing a new sound to Uganda’s Airwaves and winning a number of accolades including The Pam Award Producer of the Year 2010 and The Buzz Teeniez Award for Beat Maker of the Year 2010. In 2011 Benon Released his very first solo album entitled “Olunaku Olupya (New day)” which had songs like "Hope",  "Ani Yali Amanyi", "Because of you" etc, on this debut solo Album, he worked with the likes of Michael Ouma, Herbert Kinobe, Pragmo, Kaz Kasozi, Winstone Mayanjya, Brian Muganyi, Jude Mugerwa, Estar Nabaasa, to create a blend that’s African yet urban and soulful. [7]

In 2021, Benon was appointed to buganda tourism board to spearhead tourism initiatives in Buganda Kingdom. [8]

Music

Benon first made his name under a music duo Benon and Vamposs. The duo started doing music in 2000. The duo had successful songs like "Mumulete", "I know", "Nsazewo", and "My lady". [9] The video for their song "Mumuleete" made it to the top ten on MTV chart in UK. [10] In 2009, Vampino opted for a solo career as Benon concentrated on music production. He has had successful singles like "Ani yali amanyi" originally done by Elly Wamala, "Hope", "Owana lwaki akaaba" and "Singa Kisoboka". [11]

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known by his stage name Bobi Wine, is a Ugandan politician, singer, and actor. He is a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, in Uganda's Central Region. He also leads the National Unity Platform political party. In June 2019, he announced his candidacy for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election. He participated in the 2021 election where he lost to the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Radio & Weasel was a Ugandan music Duo that performed under their record label Goodlyfe Crew a Ugandan music group with lead performers being singers Moses Radio and [Weasel Manizo]. Moses Radio provided smooth RnB vocals while Weasel's contribution is a fusion of reggae, ragga and dancehall vibes. Because of their prominence, Moses Radio and Weasel formed their own duo known as Radio and Weasel. The Lead singer Moses and Vocalist Radio died on 1 February 2018 from brain injuries after an assault by a bouncer at a club in Entebbe. Radio's attacker threw him down about 3 metres (9.8 ft) onto a concrete pavement which resulted in massive intracranial hemorrhage.

Edrisah Kenzo Musuuza, known professionally as Eddy Kenzo, is a Grammy-nominated Ugandan singer and music executive who is a founder and a member of Big Talent Entertainment. He received international attention after the release of his 2014 single, "Sitya Loss" and an accompanying viral video that featured the Ghetto Kids. In total, he has released 4 albums, including Roots in 2018 and most recently Made in Africa in 2021. Swangz Avenue is an Ugandan record label. It was established in 2008 by Ugandan musician and record producer Benon Mugumya.

Nicholas Tatambuka, better known by his stage names Nick Nola and Nicky Nola, is a Ugandan R&B singer-songwriter and dancer who came to prominence as a member of the musical group Hip Hop Canvas. Signed to Platinum Records, the group first arrived on the music scene in 2005 with their single "Mother Africa", which won Best Hip Hop Single. In 2010, Nola was included in Ladybrille's list of the "15 African Breakout Artists of The Year". In 2013, HiPipo 5Star rated him the 34th most popular artist in the whole of East Africa.

Elly Wamala was a Ugandan musician. On 22 August 2004, he succumbed to throat cancer at Mulago Hospital. Wamala was one of Uganda's first musicians to release a recorded song and have it become a commercial hit in the 1950s when he released Nabutono. The song was so successful that it caught the attention of a nation and Kabaka Edward Mutesa who regularly summoned Wamala to his court to perform the song. After Nabutono, Wamala's next release was Josephine and it also became a hit. By the time of his death, he had over 60 songs to his name, including Nabutono produced in 1959, Viola (1974), Welcome Pope Paul (1969), Akaana Ka Kawalya (1974), and Ebinyumu Ebyaffe (1998), among others.

Undercover Brothers Ug also simply known as Undercover Brothers are a Ugandan music duo composed of guitarist and vocalist Jay K Mulungi and vocalist Timothy Kirya, whose music career sparked off when they won the auditions and represented Uganda in the sixth season of East Africa's biggest singing competition Tusker Project Fame. The duo released their first album titled At Dawn in December 2014. In December 2016, their song Nsikatila was nominated in the Best R&B Song category at HiPipo Music Awards (#HMA) 2017.

Suzan Kerunen is a Ugandan world music singer and songwriter who performs African contemporary music in the local Ugandan language of Alur-Jonam as well as in English, Swahili and other world languages. She is a double Kora Award nominee who competed against Ethiopia's Michaih Behaylu, Astar and Bluz and Kenyan Wahu and a PAM Award winner. She was appointed Uganda National Tourism Ambassador to promote Cultural Tourism. Kerunen has shared stages with Africa's best artists and musicians including Kenya's Suzanna Owíyo, South Africa's Yvonne Chaka Chaka, ASA and other Diaspora artists at the KORA ALL AFRICAN MUSIC AWARDS in Benin, Mama Africa Miriam Makeba, Oliver Mutukudzi, Third World, Kinobe Herbert backed up by Soul Beat Africa at The International Jazz Festival.

Lilian Apio, commonly known by many as Apio Moro is a Ugandan musician who has been writing and singing Afro-soul music in her mother tongue (Japadhola) with the touch of English and Luganda, telling stories from her experiences through the journey of life. Music in Africa has described her music as having "a touch of hip-hop, RnB, Soul, and a little rock".

Priscilla Zawedde better known by her stage name Azawi is a Ugandan singer, songwriter and dancer signed by Swangz Avenue in 2019. Her musical genre is Afrobeats in both Luganda and English. She became the first female Ugandan act to appear on the New York "Times Square" and Los Angeles billboards.
