The Berlin Borough School District is a community public school district that serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade from Berlin Borough, in Camden County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. [3] [4] [5]
As of the 2023–24 school year, the district, comprised of one school, had an enrollment of 848 students and 77.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.0:1. [1]
The district had been classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "DE", the fifth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J. [6]
Public school students in ninth through twelfth grades attend the Eastern Camden County Regional High School District, a limited-purpose, public regional school district that serves students at Eastern Regional High School from the constituent communities of Berlin Borough, Gibbsboro and Voorhees Township. [7] As of the 2023–24 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 1,898 students and 144.8 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.1:1. [8]
In 1948, during de jure educational segregation in the United States, the district had a school for black children with an outdoor pump and restrooms and two indoor rooms. Noma Jensen of The Journal of Negro Education described the school as being "in bad physical conditions". [9]
The New Jersey Alliance for Social, Emotional and Character Development (NJASECD) recognized Berlin Community School as 2012 New Jersey School of Character (NJSOC) - honorable mention. [10]
The district was selected as one of the top "100 Best Communities for Music Education in America 2005" by the American Music Conference. [11]

The district's board of education is comprised of nine members who set policy and oversee the fiscal and educational operation of the district through its administration. As a Type II school district, the board's trustees are elected directly by voters to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with three seats up for election each year held (since 2012) as part of the November general election. The board appoints a superintendent to oversee the district's day-to-day operations and a business administrator to supervise the business functions of the district. [19] [20] [21]

As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 7,489, a decrease of 99 (−1.3%) from the 2010 census count of 7,588, which in turn reflected an increase of 1,439 (+23.4%) from the 6,149 counted in the 2000 census.
Gibbsboro is a borough in Camden County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 2,189, a decrease of 85 (−3.7%) from the 2010 census count of 2,274, which in turn reflected a decline of 161 (−6.6%) from the 2,435 counted in the 2000 census.
Voorhees Township is a township in Camden County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The township is a suburb in the Delaware Valley / Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 31,069, an increase of 1,938 (+6.7%) from the 2010 census count of 29,131, which in turn reflected an increase of 1,005 (+3.6%) from the 28,126 counted in the 2000 census.
