Two branch campuses are in the Kansas City metropolitan area on the Kansas side:the university's medical school and hospital in Kansas City,Kansas,the Edwards Campus in Overland Park. There are also educational and research sites in Garden City,Hays,Leavenworth,Parsons,and Topeka,an agricultural education center in rural north Douglas County,and branches of the medical school in Salina and Wichita. From 2009 to 2014,Currall served as Dean of the UC Davis Graduate School of Management. He has also held leadership roles at University College London and Rice University. On March 22,2019,Currall was named to succeed Judy Genshaft as president of the University of South Florida,and took office July 1,2019. He announced his resignation due to health and family reasons on July 19,2021.

The history of the University of Kansas can be traced back to 1855,when efforts were begun to establish a "University of the Territory of Kansas." Nine years later in 1864,together with the help of Amos Adams Lawrence,former Kansas Governor Charles L. Robinson,and several other prominent figures,the Kansas Legislature chartered the University of Kansas in Lawrence,Kansas. The university was initially funded by a $15,000 endowment on a 40-acre (160,000 m2) allotment of land from Charles Robinson and his wife Sara. The university commenced preparatory-level classes in 1866 and college-level classes in 1869.

Before being promoted to the executive vice chancellor at the University of Kansas Medical Center,Girod was the senior dean for the School of Medicine while dually serving as a surgeon at the University of Kansas Health System where he began his career in 1994. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy Reserve.
