Bernard Makuza (born 30 September 1962) [1] is a Rwandan politician who was Prime Minister of Rwanda from 8 March 2000 to 6 October 2011. He also served as President of the Senate of Rwanda from 14 October 2014 to 17 October 2019.
Makuza's father was Anastase Makuza,who served as a minister during Grégoire Kayibanda's presidency. [2] Like his father,Bernard Makuza attended Saint Léon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi.
Makuza was a member of the Republican Democratic Movement (MDR) before the party was dissolved on 14 April 2003 because of its history of promoting genocide ideology. [3] Makuza resigned his membership in the MDR before being appointed prime minister. In 2006,during his term as prime minister,Makuza identified as belonging to no party. [4]
Makuza was the Rwandan Ambassador to Burundi and then Ambassador to Germany [5] before being appointed as prime minister in March 2000. His appointment to the latter post by President Pasteur Bizimungu followed the resignation of Prime Minister Pierre-Célestin Rwigema,who had been heavily criticized in the Rwandan press and by some parliamentarians. Makuza remained at the head of a new government named on March 8,2008,which was composed of 21 ministers and six secretaries of state. [7]
On 6 October 2011,President Kagame appointed Pierre Habumuremyi to replace Makuza as prime minister. Makuza was instead appointed to the Senate. [8] In the Senate,Makuza served as Vice-President for Legislation and Government Oversight. He was subsequently elected as President of the Senate,with 25 out of 26 votes in favor and no opposing candidate,and sworn in on 14 October 2014. [9]
Léon Kengo wa Dondo is a Congolese politician who served as the "first state commissioner" several times under Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaïre. He was one of the most powerful figures in the regime and was a strong advocate of economic globalization and free-market economics. He served as President of the Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2007 to 2019.

Faustin Twagiramungu was a Rwandan politician. He was Prime Minister of Rwanda from 1994 until his resignation in 1995,the first head of government appointed after the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) captured Kigali. He soon came to disagree with the RPF's policies and actions,resigned and was placed under house arrest,but managed to leave the country and settle in Belgium. He continued his opposition activity against Paul Kagame's rule,subsequently returning to Rwanda and standing for elections,but without success.
Agathe Uwilingiyimana,sometimes known as Madame Agathe,was a Rwandan political figure. She served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 18 July 1993 until her assassination on 7 April 1994,during the opening stages of the Rwandan genocide. She was also Rwanda's acting head of state in the hours leading up to her death.

Jean-Damascène Ntawukuriryayo is a Rwandan politician who served as president of the Senate of Rwanda from 2011 to 2014. He also served as Minister of Health in Rwanda. He became president of the Senate in October 2011,and also served for a time as vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies.
Rosemary Museminali is a Rwandan politician and diplomat,currently working for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS),as its representative at the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Museminali is best known for her role as the Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from 2005 until 2009. She has also served as the country's Minister of State for International Cooperation and as ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Pierre-Damien Habumuremyi is a Rwandan politician who served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 7 October 2011 until 24 July 2014. He previously served as Minister of Education from May 2011 to October 2011.
