Berry John Versfeld (born 26 September 1943) was a first-class South African cricketer who played for Natal and South African Universities and was nominated Cricketer of the Year by the South African Cricket Annual in 1966. [1] [2]
Versfeld was educated at Estcourt High School and at the University of Natal.
Versfeld's first class debut was for Natal against the touring New Zealand team in November 1961,aged 18. He represented both Natal and South African Universities that season,scoring 206 runs at an average of 25.75. [3] The 1962/3 season was a lean season for Versfeld and in the next three seasons he was selected to represent the South African Universities XI each year. He also made one appearance for Natal during this period. In December 1965,with his university studies behind him,he became a regular player for Natal until the end of the 1969/70 season,taking over the captaincy of the team from Jackie McGlew during the 1967/8 season. He retained the captaincy until the start of the 1969/70 season.
Versfeld also played baseball and in 1966 was offered a spot on a Pittsburgh Pirates minor league farm team,but he turned the opportunity down in order to concentrate on cricket in South Africa. [4] [5] After he completed his first class cricket career,he continued his education at Harvard,graduating with an MBA and he settled in the United States. [5]
Shaun Maclean Pollock is a South African cricket commentator and former cricketer,who was captain in all formats of the game. A bowling all-rounder,Pollock along with Allan Donald formed a bowling partnership for many years. From 2000 to 2003 he was the captain of the South African cricket team,and also played for Africa XI,World XI,Dolphins and Warwickshire. He was chosen as the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2003. Pollock was a member of the South Africa team that won the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy,the only ICC trophy the country has won till date.
Thomas William "Tom" Graveney was an English first-class cricketer,representing his country in 79 Test matches and scoring over 4,800 runs. In a career lasting from 1948 to 1972,he became the 15th player to score one hundred first-class centuries;he was the first batsman beginning his career after the Second World War to reach this milestone. He played for Gloucestershire and Worcestershire,and helped Worcestershire win the county championship for the first time in their history. His achievements for England after being recalled in 1966 have been described as "the stuff of legend." Graveney was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1953,captained England on one occasion and was awarded the OBE while still playing.
Robert Graeme Pollock is a former cricketer for South Africa,Transvaal and Eastern Province. A member of a famous cricketing family,Pollock is widely regarded as one of South Africa's greatest ever cricketers,and as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. Despite Pollock's international career being cut short at the age of 26 by the sporting boycott of South Africa,and all but one of his 23 Test matches being against England and Australia,the leading cricket nations of the day,he broke a number of records. His completed career Test match batting average of 60.97 remains the third best behind Sir Don Bradman and Adam Voges.
Alan Melville was a South African cricketer who played in 11 Tests from 1938 to 1949. He was born in Carnarvon,Northern Cape,South Africa and died at Sabie,Transvaal.
Brian Lee Irvine is a former cricketer who played four Tests for South Africa in 1969–70 in the last Test series played by South Africa before official sporting links were broken over the apartheid policy.
Dale Martin Benkenstein is a former South African cricketer who was an all-rounder. He is currently first-team coach at Gloucestershire,having previously held the same role at Hampshire. Benkenstein was a member of the South Africa team that won the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy,the only ICC trophy the country has won till date.
Trevor Leslie Goddard was a South African cricketer. A left-handed all-rounder,he played 41 Test matches for South Africa from 1955 to 1970. He captained the young South African team on its five-month tour of Australia and New Zealand in the 1963–64 season,levelling the series with Australia,and was also captain in 1964–65 against England in South Africa.
Roy Alastair McLean was a South African cricketer who played in 40 Test matches between 1951 and 1964. A stroke-playing middle-order batsman,he scored over 2,000 Test runs,but made 11 ducks in 73 Test innings.
Colin "Tich" Wesley was a South African cricketer who played in three Test matches in 1960.
William Stephen"Buster" Farrer is a former South African cricketer who played in six Test matches between 1962 and 1964. He also played tennis and hockey at international level.

He was born in Rondebosch,Cape Town,where his father,Pieter van der Bijl,was headmaster of the Diocesan College Preparatory School after retiring from playing first-class cricket for Western Province and South Africa. His grandfather,V.A.W. van der Bijl,and great-uncle,Voltelin van der Bijl,also played first-class cricket for Western Province.
Christopher Peter Wilkins was a South African cricketer who played for Border from 1962/63 to 1970/71,for Derbyshire,from 1970 to 1972,for Eastern Province from 1972/73 to 1977/78 and for Natal from 1978/79 to 1982/83.
KwaZulu-Natal is the first-class cricket team that represents the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. For the purposes of the Sunfoil Series,KwaZulu-Natal is the only team that has not merged with another and it has played in the SuperSport Series as the Dolphins since October 2004.
