Betty Ireland (born 1946) was the 28th Secretary of State of West Virginia from 2005 to 2009,as the first woman elected to the executive branch of West Virginia state government. [1] She was also the first Republican elected to that position since 1972. Ireland did not seek a second term in 2008 due to her parents' health. [2] On December 30,2010,Ireland announced she would run in the 2011 West Virginia gubernatorial special election,where she came in second place in the Republican primary. [3]
Early in her career,Ireland spent several years teaching in the West Virginia public school system. Eventually,she entered the business sector,when Ireland took a job as an administrative assistant with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance. [4] She subsequently became a certified pension consultant. [5]
For nearly six years (from 1977 to 1983),she was the owner of Retirement Systems &Services,a pension administration and consulting firm in Charleston,West Virginia. From 1983 to 1989,she was vice president and head of the pension division in the Trust Department of the Charleston National Bank of Commerce. Ireland moved to Jackson Kelly. [4]
Ireland became executive director of the West Virginia Consolidated Public Retirement Board in August 1998. [4] She returned to Jackson Kelly in 2002 to head its ancillary business endeavors as president of Jackson Kelly Solutions. [4]
In 2004,Ireland defeated longtime political figure Ken Hechler,52% to 48%,in a general election race,as Hechler attempted to return to the Secretary of State position he previously held for sixteen years.[ citation needed ]
On December 30,2010,Ireland announced her intention to run for governor in the special election that was to be held on October 4,2011. [3] [6] [7] She lost the primary election to political newcomer Bill Maloney.

Natalie E. Tennant is an American politician who served as the Secretary of State of West Virginia from 2009 to 2017. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Tennant was the 2014 Democratic Party nominee for West Virginia's open U.S. Senate seat,which she lost to Republican Shelley Moore Capito. In 2016 she was defeated for re-election by Republican Mac Warner,and left office on January 16,2017.

This was the first open U.S. Senate seat in West Virginia since 1984 and the first in this seat since 1956. Manchin won the open seat and served out the remainder of Byrd's elected term,which ended on January 3,2013.
Betty T. Yee is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as California State Controller from 2015 to 2023. She previously served as a member of the California Board of Equalization from 2004 to 2015. She won the open seat for Controller in the 2014 election,with 54% of the vote. Yee won reelection in 2018,defeating Republican Konstantinos Roditis in a landslide,and she served as Controller until January 2,2023.
The 2011 West Virginia gubernatorial special election was a special election held on October 4,2011,to fill the office of the West Virginia Governor,which became vacant upon the resignation of Joe Manchin,who resigned after he won a U.S. Senate special election. Lieutenant Governor and Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin,first in the line of succession to the governorship,subsequently became acting governor. On January 18,2011,the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals ruled that a special election for the governorship must be held so a new governor can be in place by November 15,2011,exactly one year after Manchin resigned. The primary election was held on May 14. Tomblin and Republican Bill Maloney won their respective primaries.
