Betty Ayako Mochizuki (born October 31, 1929) is a Canadian painter and printmaker. Mochizuki's works consist of predominantly watercolour paintings, oil paintings, and prints. Mochizuki was born in Vancouver. Mochizuki studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, where she graduated in 1954, specializing in landscapes and still-life painting. [1] Mochizuki was a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Art until it disbanded. Betty Mochizuki and is an active member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour after being elected in 1960, [2] and was also elected as a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1976. Mochizuki held several exhibitions with the Picture Loan Society and was a heavily involved member before its closing in 1968. [1]
Betty Ayako Mochizuki studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Mochizuki graduated in 1954, specializing in landscapes and still-life paintings. [1] [3] Throughout her life, she studied under Canadian Artists Jock Macdonald and Jack Nichols. [3]
Betty Mochizuki is noted for her lively and impressionistic landscape designs, as well as her paintings of flowers and graphic-styled still life works. [4] Mochizuki's work touches on her family's Japanese heritage, and the integration of multiple cultural backgrounds into one's own identity [5] [4] When questioned about her works' stylistically eastern influences, she replied that "it just comes out that way." [4] Mochizuki's unnamed pen and ink drawing, which depicts several whales playing within an amulet, is featured in the poetry anthology book Whale Sound. [6] The work reflects Mochizuki's printmaking skill, illustrating her understanding of defined and steady line-work. [7] Mochizuki's oil painting Scented Memory is currently displayed in the Art Gallery of Ontario, which was donated as a gift from Douglas M. Duncan's personal collection after his passing. In the book by Joan Murray, Confessions of a Curator, a painting by Mochizuki is mentioned, though the title is not stated. The work is recalled as a favourite of the MP's receptionist, who refused to let it be taken back after the Art Gallery of Ontario had lent it. Mochizuki held several solo exhibitions with the Picture Loan Society in 1955, 1958, 1960, and 1976. Mochizuki featured her Oil Painting Cycle in the Canadian Group of Painters Exhibition in 1962 and 1963, which showcased her ability to depict abstract content among her collection of landscapes, and indicates a great range of versatility. Mochizuki's work was frequently featured in exhibitions held by the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. Mochizuki held several solo shows, one of which was composed solely of her oil paintings, [9] and another that showcased her works in watercolour. [10] In 1976, Mochizuki held another solo show of her paintings and drawings at the Sisler Gallery in Toronto. [11] Mochizuki's watercolours displayed at her solo Watercolour Exhibition in 1960 were noted for their technical excellence, though she was criticized for deriving much inspiration from the works of others. [12] Despite criticism, she was considered an artist to watch, and Colin Sabiston stated that he believed she would rank well in later years. [12] Another critic noted Mochizuki's work as being graceful, yet vivacious, with her landscape and flower paintings being stated as having charm and delicacy. [13] Two of Mochizuki's landscape paintings featured in the Jack Sullivan Sculpture Exhibit in 1965 were "especially worth mentioning" and were considered a notable attraction amongst the other works. [14] In 1962, Mochizuki was awarded the C.W. Jeffery's Award for Outstanding Graphic Art for her work [3] Most of Mochizuki's work is kept in private collections, however several of her pieces are currently displayed at University of Toronto, Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery, Sarnia, Museum London, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Franklin Carmichael was a Canadian artist and member of the Group of Seven. Though he was primarily famous for his use of watercolours, he also used oil paints, charcoal and other media to capture the Ontario landscapes. Besides his work as a painter, he worked as a designer and illustrator, creating promotional brochures, advertisements in newspapers and magazines, and designing books. Near the end of his life, Carmichael taught in the Graphic Design and Commercial Art Department at the Ontario College of Art.
Francis Hans Johnston was a member of the Group of Seven. He most commonly worked as a landscape painter though in a more conservative mode than other members of the Group. He also used tempera rather than oil paint in his Algoma landscapes, a fast-drying material that was more often associated with commercial art of his day.

Frances Anne Hopkins was a British painter. She was the third of Frederick William Beechey's five children. The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, founded in 1925, is considered to be Canada's official national watercolour Society. Since the 1980s the Society has enjoyed Vice-regal Patronage from the incumbent Governor-General of Canada. Recognized by a long list of international exhibitions it is the Canadian equivalent of such other national societies as the American Watercolor Society of the United States, the Royal Watercolour Society of the United Kingdom, etc.
Pegi Nicol MacLeod,, was a Canadian painter whose modernist self-portraits, figure studies, paintings of children, still lifes and landscapes are characterized by a fluidity of form and vibrant colour. Born Margaret Kathleen Nichol, she was a teacher, war artist and arts activist. In 1936 she became a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and one year later she joined the Canadian Group of Painters.
George Agnew Reid who signed his name as G. A. Reid was a Canadian artist, painter, influential educator and administrator. He is best known as a genre painter, but his work encompassed the mural, and genre, figure, historical, portrait and landscape subjects.
Helen Barbara Howard was a Canadian painter, wood-engraver, drafter, bookbinder and designer who produced work consistently throughout her life, from her graduation in 1951 from the Ontario College of Art until her unexpected death in 2002.

Mary Evelyn Wrinch who signed her name M. E. Wrinch (1877–1969), was a Canadian artist who created miniature paintings, oil paintings, and block prints, sometimes inspired by the Northern Ontario landscape. She pioneered the 'Canadian style', painting landscapes with bold colours of the Algoma, Muskoka and Lake Superior regions, in situ. In her miniature paintings on ivory, she depicted her sitters with freshness and vitality. Her colour block prints are virtuoso examples of the medium.
Mary Marguerite Porter Zwicker was a Canadian artist and art promoter from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Known for her watercolor paintings of landscapes and villages in Nova Scotia, Zwicker exhibited her work at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Montreal Art Association, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Together with her husband, Leroy Zwicker, she owned and operated Zwicker's Gallery; for most of the 20th century, Zwicker's Gallery was the only Halifax gallery that routinely held art exhibits open to the public. It still operates.
