Brahmapuram landfill is an overfilled waste dumping site located in the Indian city of Kochi, Kerala. [1] The Brahmapuram Solid Waste plant located here is owned and operated by the Kochi Corporation. [2] The site is a major source of environmental pollution, fire hazards, and public health and safety issues. [3] [4] The Kochi city produces more than 600 tons of waste per day and nearly 100 ton of it is decomposed at Brahmapuram Solid Waste plant into organic manure. [5] The plant which was inaugurated in 2008 to manage solid waste was eventually converted into a landfill. [6] As per March 2023, there is an estimated volume of 5.5 lakh tonnes of waste spread over 110 acres at the site. [7] On 2 March 2023, a major fire burst out at Brahmapuram waste plant engulfing many parts of city in smoke containing toxic gas for many days. [8]

2023 Brahmapuram waste plant fire

On 2 March 2023, a major fire broke out at the Brahmapuram waste plant. [9] After the fire, major parts of Kochi city was engulfed in smoke. [10] The fire broke out in a swampy area behind the Kinfra Industrial Park and the smoke spread for kilometers across the city. [11] Following the outbreak, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board slapped a fine of Rs 1.80 crore on Kochi corporation. [12] On 6 March, the toxic elements in the atmosphere of Kochi rapidly increased to a dangerous level following the outburst of fire. [13] [14] Many residents and opposition parties alleged that the fire was man made and a private agency engaged for mining the waste in the landfill played a major role in creating it. [15]

Within a week after the outburst of fire, the smoke spread across to nearby districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam. The High Court of Kerala remarked that the people of Kochi were trapped in a gas chamber. The court also criticized the Kochi Corporation and the Pollution Control Board. The garbage in Kochi city piled up in the city after the garbage removal to Brahmapuram got stopped due to fire. [16] After 12 days of continuous operations, the fire was extinguished completely on 13 March. [17]

Bellandur Lake is located in the suburb of Bellandur in the southeast of the city of Bengaluru. It is the largest lake in the city. It is a part of Bellandur drainage system that drains the southern and the south-eastern parts of the city. The lake is a receptor from three chains of lakes upstream, and has a catchment area of about 148 square kilometres. Water from this lake flows further east to the Varthur Lake, from where it flows down the plateau and eventually into the Pinakani river basin.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Chengannur, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Tirur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod will be the stations in this corridor. The project is temporarily halted by the state government till the Central government approval.

The Deonar dumping ground is a waste dumping ground or landfill in the city of Mumbai. Located in Shivaji Nagar, an eastern suburb of the city, it is India's oldest and largest dumping ground, set up in 1927. The dumping ground is managed by the city's civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which also manages two other dumping ground in the city; one in the neighbourhood of Mulund and one recently opened in Kanjurmarg.

In March 2023, a major fire broke out at the 110-acre Bhrahmapuram landfill site at Bhrahmapuram in Vadavukot-Puthankurish Panchayat, 17 km from Kochi city. The fire began on 2 March 2023 at around three in the afternoon. Smoke rising from Bhrahmapuram made life difficult for the people of Ernakulam. Due to the high level of air pollution after the fire in Ernakulam district, many people experienced cough, difficulty in breathing, headache, dizziness, eye discomfort and itching. It took 12-13 days for the fire to be brought under control. Weeks after the devastating fire at the Brahmapuram landfill, another fire was reported on 26 March.

Vehicles travelling from Kollam can enter the elevated highway near the CSI Mission Hospital in Kazhakootam.

Kundannoor flyover is a flyover, that is a part of the NH 66 in Kerala, India. The six lane flyover runs above the Kundannoor junction in Kochi, which is one of the busiest junctions in the state.
